Electrical Maintenance Engineer

1. Job Purpose
The Electrical Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of electrical, automation, and instrumentation systems in Wärtsilä diesel power plant installations. The role encompasses maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, reliability engineering, performance optimization, and engineering design enhancements of plant electrical, control, and protection systems to continuously improve system performance and operational stability.
The position provides specialized technical expertise in system analysis, root cause investigation, and engineering modifications to prevent unplanned outages, improve equipment reliability, and enhance plant maintainability. This includes supporting design reviews, system upgrades, control system improvements, and technical solutions to optimize electrical distribution, control architecture, and automation integration.
The Electrical Maintenance Engineer ensures full compliance with Wärtsilä Quality, Environment, Health, and Safety (QEHS) standards, contributing directly to plant availability, operational excellence, and sustainable long-term asset performance.
2. Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and execute preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities for electrical, automation, and instrumentation systems in Wärtsilä diesel power plant installations.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting, diagnostics, and repair of electrical equipment, automation systems, and control circuits to ensure reliable plant operation and minimize downtime.
- Maintain and support Wärtsilä engine automation and control systems, including VASA and W32 platforms, as well as UNIC and WOODWARD control systems, ensuring proper configuration, system integrity, and operational reliability.
- Maintain and troubleshoot Alfa Laval control systems associated with Lube Oil and Fuel Oil Separators and other auxiliary equipment supporting engine and plant operations.
- Inspect, test, and maintain plant electrical equipment, including generators, alternators, motor control centers (MCC), switchgear, protection relays, transformers, and electrical distribution systems.
- Analyze electrical faults and control system failures by interpreting electrical schematics, control logic diagrams, and technical documentation to identify root causes and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Support plant shutdowns, major maintenance activities, and system upgrades, including electrical inspections, testing, commissioning, and verification of system performance.
- Participate in engineering design reviews and system improvement initiatives, recommending technical modifications and upgrades to enhance system reliability, maintainability, safety, and operational efficiency.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including maintenance reports, inspection records, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), maintenance procedures, and technical improvement reports.
- Support reliability and performance improvement initiatives by monitoring system performance, analyzing equipment trends, and recommending engineering solutions for continuous improvement.
- Ensure compliance with Wärtsilä QEHS requirements, plant safety procedures, and applicable electrical standards during all maintenance and operational activities.
- Coordinate closely with operations, mechanical maintenance, and project teams to ensure effective execution of maintenance activities and alignment with plant operational objectives.
- Provide technical guidance, knowledge sharing, and mentoring to maintenance personnel and support training initiatives to strengthen electrical maintenance competencies.
- Perform other related duties as required to support plant reliability, maintenance strategies, and operational requirements.
3. Qualifications and Experience
Education and Professional Credentials
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
• Registered Electrical Engineer (REE) license
Experience
• Minimum 5 years of experience in electrical maintenance, automation, or instrumentation in power generation, marine, or industrial facilities.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with diesel power plant electrical systems, automation platforms, and power generation equipment.
• Experience with engine-based power plants, auxiliary systems, and balance-of-plant equipment is highly desirable.
Technical Competencies
• Strong knowledge of electrical power systems and control systems used in diesel power plants.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics, control diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Experience in troubleshooting, testing, and maintaining electrical and automation systems to ensure equipment reliability and operational continuity.
• Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) is an advantage.
Language and Communication Skills
• Good command of English (written and spoken) for effective communication with technical teams and stakeholders.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment.
Work Location and Availability
• Willingness to be assigned in Masbate, anywhere in the Philippines, and internationally as required.
• Available for emergency maintenance support, shutdown activities, and project implementation when necessary.
Preferred / Advantageous Experience
Experience in the following areas is considered an advantage:
- Electrical Engineering Design for Power Plants, including electrical system architecture, single-line diagram (SLD) development, load flow analysis, protection coordination, and equipment specification.
- Wärtsilä Engine Automation and Control Systems (e.g., UNIC, WOODWARD governor systems), including control configuration, system integration, and performance optimization.
- Diesel Engine-Generator Control, Synchronization, and Load Sharing Systems, including interface design with Power Management Systems (PMS) and grid synchronization schemes.
- Speed Governor and Engine Control Systems, including control tuning, stability optimization, and integration with plant automation systems.
- Power Generators / Alternators and Excitation Systems (AVR), including excitation control design, voltage regulation, and generator protection coordination.
- Motor Control, Protection, and Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) Systems, including motor starting methods, drive integration, and electrical protection design for critical plant equipment.
- Electrical Distribution Systems, Switchgear, Protection Relays, and Power Management Systems (PMS), including protection coordination studies, switchgear configuration, and load management strategies.
- PLC and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for power plant automation and process control, including control logic design, I/O architecture, and system integration with engine and auxiliary systems.
- SCADA and Power Plant Monitoring Systems for supervisory control and data acquisition, including system configuration, communication networks, and real-time plant performance monitoring.
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Grid Integration Systems, including system interface design, load balancing, and integration with renewable or hybrid power plant systems.
