Junior CFD Expert

Wärtsilä is looking for a Junior Computational Fluid Dynamics Expert to join our engineering team. Working on a more sustainable future through propulsion upgrades of the world’s largest vessels.

 

In this position, you will be responsible for the complex hydrodynamic analyses of ship propellers and related energy saving devices. On a typical day, you might be starting with evaluating your CFD analyses and discuss the results, and possible optimizations, during the day with the Hydrodynamic Design Engineer. The goal is to have the best possible CFD analyses for upgrades of ship propulsion systems in order to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 reduction.

 

Our projects are carried out within multidisciplinary teams (Mechanical-, Electrical-, Automation-, and Hydrodynamic Engineering) spread over our main offices in Drunen (The Netherlands) and Finland (Helsinki). The preferred location for this position is our office in Drunen.

 

You can add extra value in our team if you have a pro-active attitude, solid communication skills and are able to plan, act and deliver in time. 

Your main responsibilities are to:

  • You are responsible for various propulsion related numerical flow simulations like; efficiency, resistance, pressure distribution, cavitation, propeller-hull interaction etc. as part of commercial projects.

  • You will use your knowledge and experience to support our Hydrodynamic Engineers in their development to run more standardized calculations.

  • Assist the Sr CFD Expert with improvements of design methods, processes and products.

  • Carry out non-standard CFD requests. Set-up model and review of results to be done after consulting Sr CFD Expert.

  • Report and present your results to internal customers

 

Main requirements in this role are:

  • Detailed understanding in numerical hydrodynamical theory, simulation and analyses.

  • Experience from working with STAR CCM+ or Open Foam is appreciated.

  • Scripting experience with python and/or java.

  • A master’s degree in Maritime Technology, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Science or similar.

  • Most important is to be curious and eager to learn.

As a CFD Expert, you will be working in close cooperation with other departments of our Project Group such as Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation and Project Management. You will work directly with our team of 8 hydrodynamic specialists, who report to the Manager Hydrodynamic Design.
