Design Engineer Waterjets

Do you like working on waterjets for the fastest vessels in the world? Are you the engineer that likes to be challenged by the design & development of these state-of-the-art propulsors?

And Is an international working environment and the maritime business, something that excites you? Than have a look at our Design Engineer position in our Waterjet team. 


In the position of Design Engineer at Wärtsilä in Drunen (the Netherlands), you find yourself at the hart of our Propulsion business. In this team you work in a small but dedicated team with the focus on the Development, Design and Service of our Waterjet product portfolio.


In our business, no customer request is similar. Customers can be found all over the world, having their own specific needs and requirements for their high-speed vessels and the waterjets. Together with the increased focus to reduce the industries’ impact to the environment and the dynamics of the business are making the mechanical design an interesting challenge.


Besides the other Waterjet Experts working in this team, you will have the chance to work with many other Wärtsilä departments, suppliers and the customers.

What are your main tasks and responsibilities?

  • We have Waterjets experts focussing on the Hydraulics, Fluid Dynamics, Materials. Your expertise in our team: The Mechanical Design of the waterjets.
  • From the start of a project, you will be involved. You provide engineering and technical support in the sales phase to make sure we offer the right solution to our customers.
  • When the offer is accepted, you work on the project specific designs, as well as the non-standard solutions specific for our customers worldwide.
  • Together with your colleagues you provide engineering support for our Product Development and R&D projects.
  • You create (new) engineering solutions and ensure they are applied in new designs.


What do we expect from you?

  • You hold a Bachelor or Master degree preferably in Mechanical Engineering or similar.
  • In this position it would be a great benefit if you already have experience designing customer specific mechanical systems in the machine building, maritime or oil & gas industry.
  • Knowledge of CAD system (preferably NX) and PDM systems (Teamcenter).
  • Naval architect knowledge is a plus, since you will be working with maritime customers.
  • Since we are an international company, you will be working with people from different nationalities across the world, therefor good communication skills in English are a must.
