Mechanical Expert, Waterjets

What do you do as a Mechanical Expert of our Waterjets product group? That’s a good question. Let us try to give you some examples of your work throughout the week.

Monday morning, 7:30, you arrive at the office. Not because you have to be in early, but you like it when it is still quiet at the office. At 9:00 you have a meeting scheduled with your team (CFD Expert, Mechanical Design Engineer and Sales Manager) to discuss this new offer for a navy vessel. It’s always a challenge to design a new product with the highest possible power density while the vessel needs to stay as light as possible. Finding the best solution for this question might take you one or two days.

While Monday and Tuesday where all about specific customer projects, you have scheduled yourself some time to work on the development in our new generation waterjets. Investigating about new materials, taking in consideration the right mechanical principals, strength calculations, etc. When you are in the middle of reading an article about FEM methods, you receive a phone call form Technical Support. One of our customers experience difficulties in the power of the Waterjet they have installed few months ago. Since you know all about the mechanical constructions of this waterjets, you offer to schedule a meeting next morning to figure out what might be the problem.

As you see, in this position there is never a dull moment. You have the chance to work together with customers, suppliers and several Wärtsilä departments such as Sales Support, Project Management, Engineering and Warrantee.

What are your main tasks and responsibilities?

  • You assist our sales departments regarding non-standard design questions related to mechanical designs, hydraulics, strength calculations, etc.
  • For the delivery projects, you are responsible for final calculations of the waterjet, supporting the Design Engineers and providing support on technical issues.
  • Separately, you will work on performance improvements of the waterjet product portfolio.
  • You define, lead and participate in development projects for waterjet product improvement.
  • You develop tools and methods for waterjet related calculations.
  • Safeguard the waterjet knowledge, development of mechanical tools and developments.

What do we expect from you?

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design and manufacturing, Aerodynamics or similar.
  • It would be great if you have in dept knowledge about Waterjets, but we understand that might not be the case. Experience in designing and calculating mechanical systems in the maritime, automotive or aviation industry would also be great.
  • Knowledge of FEM methods, and general machine building practices, are seen as an advantage, as well as any experience as a naval architect.
  • You are a strong communicator with good organizational and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in the English language, oral and written.
