Senior Design Engineer Mechanical

 

to join our team working for a better future. 

 

The preferred location for the position is in Drunen, The Netherlands. 

 

What you will be doing 

 

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer you are responsible for customized design of Marine Propulsion Systems like steerable thrusters, controllable propeller systems, water jets and Energy Saving Devices. You work on the replacement of old technologies, add functionalities to Wärtsilä equipment or adapted design to existing interfaces. As a member of the design engineering team you also act as a supervisor during production by subcontractors and assistance during the sales phase with the creation of technical specifications and cost estimations.  Within multi-disciplinary propulsion upgrade or retrofit projects you will take the lead and responsibility of the interfacing engineering. 

 

In this position you will be working within an internationally orientated organisation within multidisciplinary project teams consisting of four different engineering disciplines, project management, purchasing, assembly, supply, installation and commissioning. You will be working in a team of approximately 9 other Mechanical experts who are reporting to the Manager Mechanical Engineering. 


As Senior Design Engineer Mechanical your work will focus on these responsibilities: 

 

  • Take the lead in multi-disciplinary propulsion projects and integration engineering.  
  • You are responsible for the mechanical design of propulsion systems including complex analysis of strength (FEM), vibration and alignment calculations and hydraulic specifications.
  • Design according to customer specifications and requirements, within lead time and cost estimation and according to classification rules.
  • Take care for effective clear technical communication with the customer, design offices, and research entities concerning engineering. This in cooperation with the Project Manager and/or Sales Manager.
  • You arrange classification approval of the propulsion system.
  • Take an active role in improvements of design methods, processes and products.
     

To be successful in this role we expect you to have: 

 

  • You hold a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering / Naval Architecture with several years of relative design experience.
  • Experienced with the design of mechanical (propulsion) systems in Teamcenter Siemens NX or other 3D design tools are a must.
  • You have a basic understanding of (digital) manufacturing methods such as welding, casting, machining, measuring and assembling. 
  • You have experience with strength / fatigue calculations, using FEM software package
  • Experience with calculations on dynamic behaviour such as (FEM) modal / harmonic response analyses, Torsional vibration or whirling behaviour are an advantage 
  • Well-developed communication skills spoken and written in English.
  • You are pro-active and able to work in a structured way.
  • Sense for business, experience working in project teams and you can cope with stress.
