Digital Engineering Trainee

Wärtsilä provides equipment to one in three of the world's vessels, from intelligent navigation control systems to engines the size of a bus. But we're not just an industrial equipment company: we're building the hardware, software, and data science that underpins the marine and energy industries of the future. The projects we build have very real outputs, and high visibility; see for example

We're looking for solution-oriented folks to come and help us build this future and help lead the way. We are working in a traditional industry that is ready to change; we can put your skillset to use immediately and see real, rapid results.
Wärtsilä is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, but with offices in 85 countries globally. We employ around 19,000 people, with a common mission: to build smart technology for sustainable societies.

We are now seeking a Trainee

... to work in our Digital Engineering team to support the technical engineering work.  Digital Engineering is a strategically important team within Wärtsilä, responsible for developing and rolling out the hardware, software and data capabilities for Wärtsilä's next generation of products and services.

This role is key to Wärtsilä's ability to deploy digitally enabled products effectively.  This is a new programme of activity, working with a talented, experienced team from across different domains, and expected to grow rapidly.  A key part of the role is in shaping the technologies, processes and ways of working to help Wärtsilä manage digital deployments at scale - there are a lot of challenges to be faced, and we don't know how to address them all yet!

The position is based in Helsinki. To qualify as a trainee, you must be a full-time student. The contract is temporary for six months, 0-25 hours/week.

The Trainee will be assisting both Technical Delivery Engineers and Systems Engineers inside the Solution Delivery team, which is part of Digital Engineering.

Support tasks are varied but will include the following:
- Creating, and updating, drawings using CAD software
- Checking and verifying data flows and updating our database
- Creating and formatting various documentation that is essential for the team's work

In addition, together with your teammates, you will work towards improving our way of working (processes, tool development etc.) to make the related tasks smoother going forward.

What kind of attributes / skills are we looking for in our Trainee?
- A proactive self-starter, enthusiastic about the work, eager to learn and willing to nag team members to assign work to them!
- Studies in a relevant field such as computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
- Experience working with CAD software
- Experience working with Microsoft Office
- Basic understanding of programming
- Basic understanding of electrical wiring
- Ability to work efficiently either alone or in a team

We also value experience in the following areas:
- Interest or previous experience in the marine industry
- Programming skills in Python or other
- Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously without sacrificing the quality of work
- A customer oriented mindset
- Meticulous attention to detail

In addition to interesting, hands-on work in a capable team in an international environment, we offer good opportunities for professional development and a strong teamwork culture.

The position requires a good command of English, both spoken and written. Applicants must have the right to work in Finland without restriction.

To apply, please fill in the form at  The closing date is 29th September 2019.
