Systems Certification and Regulatory Compliance Manager
Role Overview
The Systems Certification and Regulatory Compliance Manager role leads certification and regulatory compliance programs, team, and all relevant activities.
Role Purpose
The System Compliance Manager is responsible for developing, executing, and maintaining the compliance and certification strategy for Wärtsilä Energy Storage products. This role ensures that Energy Storage Systems (ESS) meet applicable regulatory, safety, functional safety, and market certification requirements, enabling compliant and on-time product launches across global markets.
The role acts as the central interface between HW engineering, product management, program management, certification agencies, and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs).
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the Systems Certification and Regulatory Compliance Team by developing a standardized, efficient, and sustainable testing environment, infrastructure, and process framework.
- Foster a culture of growth and accountability by coaching, mentoring, and managing engineers while ensuring clear, constructive, and professional communication at all levels.
- Drive continuous improvement by implementing industry best practices and optimizing testing methodologies for efficiency and accuracy.
- Leverage deep technical expertise in BESS to design, plan, coordinate and oversee product certification and compliance activities with third-party labs, certification agencies, and internal stakeholders relating to UL 9540A/LSFT, UL9540, UL1741, UL1973, IEC 62619, IEC 62933-5-2, NFPA 855, etc.
- As needed, lead all aspects of UL9540A Unit Level, Large-Scale Fire, UL9540 and any other test projects including test plan development, instrumentation at factory level, test setup and execution at third-party laboratories to ensure timely and successful execution.
- Promote cross-functional collaboration with Engineering, Product Management, and regional teams to ensure alignment and knowledge sharing.
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) and primary point of contact for all communications with certification bodies and external test laboratories
- Represent Wärtsilä at the standards organization working on product safety for lithium-ion battery systems.
- Collaborate with program and project managers to meet deadlines, define test KPIs, and ensure timely reporting of progress, results, and risks.
- Analyze, process, and present test data in a clear and structured format suitable for internal and external stakeholders.
- Make informed, agile decisions based on available resources, timelines, and technical constraints, adapting as needed.
- Work closely with PM, Logistics, and Engineering teams to ensure test units are prepared and delivered on time to meet testing schedules.
Required Qualifications And Experience
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in product compliance, certification, or safety engineering, preferably in energy storage, power electronics, or industrial systems.
- 5+ years of working experience as CE coordinator, safety engineer/manager or similar role
- Proven leadership experience, including managing certification or testing teams and mentoring engineers.
- Hands‑on experience with UL and IEC certification processes.
- Experience in energy storage system related standard and regulations UL9540A, LSFT, NFPA, UL 1741, UL9540, UL1973, etc.
- Proven experience managing certification testing programs and external laboratories.
- Understanding of ESS design and architecture is strongly preferred.
- Experience with scheduling, budgeting, and resource planning.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
- Analytical mindset with a focus on identifying risks and optimization.
- Commitment to fostering a culture of innovation, quality, accountability, and professional growth.
- Previous experience with grid code compliance and fire safety testing for ESS is a strong advantage.
- Ability to work with global team from different backgrounds and on different time zones.
- Maintain positive working relationships with peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment.
