Wärtsilä North America is seeking an experienced Environmental, Health & Safety Coordinator to join our team. If you want to join a global organization with opportunities for continued development, this may be your role.

As an Environmental, Health & Safety Coordinator, you will advise and assist site managers, project staff, and others in supporting planning, organizing, controlling, and maintaining a safe and healthy environment at the site. You will also have an understanding of regulatory company requirements and procedures to be complied with, among other responsibilities. The ideal candidate must have previous experience auditing ISO Compliance Management Systems, and have expertise with OSHA requirements.  This role will be about 80% Health & Safety and 20% Environmental.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Ensure EHS compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations.
  • Advise and assist the Contract Manager, Plant Manager, Plant staff, and other persons involved in planning, organizing, controlling, and maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
  • Review daily submittals of WeCare cases including Near Misses, Incidents and Injuries, Hazard Observations and Safety Walks.
  • Engage with employees to acknowledge and discuss the submittal of reports.
  • Plan and lead Safety Walks.
  • Manage and seek to continually improve the training programs.
  • Seek new, creative alternatives to keep employees engaged and learning.
  • Participate in working groups to support improvement in all areas of QEHS.
  • Participate as an internal auditor to support stakeholders in North Region business units.
  • Drive EHS improvement: Research a new PPE and training for our engineers based on near-miss reports and other lagging indicators.
  • Provide support, as needed, to employees in efforts to ensure their health and safety. This includes after-hours and weekend as-needed support to our field service teams who are on the job 24/7.
  • Lead investigations and develop corrective actions for injuries and other incidents (non-personal injury).
  • Maintain LTIR and TRIR per company requirements, as these metrics are closely monitored.
  • Ensure that all employees are inducted, as per the Safety Procedure on Induction and Training.
  • Support the Plant Manager in identifying staff training needs as per the training matrix.
  • Conduct on-site training as required.
  • Plan and coordinate required training provided by a 3rd party vendor.
  • Develop and implement solutions for emergency preparedness plans for the site.
  • Ensure employees at each level are involved in the planning stage of any modification and new installation for hazard identification.
  • Ensure firefighting equipment is properly maintained in good order and fire drills are carried out.
  • Ensure that drills are carried out for all identified emergency situations.
  • Ensure necessary personal protective equipment is made available to individual employees.

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

  • College degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Engineering, or relevant field of study
  • Knowledge of EHS protocols and best practices
  • Previous experience auditing ISO Compliance Management Systems
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA requirements.
  • Excellent influencing and communication skills, virtually and in a global environment.
  • Initiative and authentic concern for others' well-being
  • Positive, hands-on, and solution-oriented working style with an excellent ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with peers and stakeholders.
  • English proficiency.
  • Ability to travel 20% of the time within Guyana, the Caribbean, and the North American region. Travel outside North America may be required, infrequently.

Travel Requirements:
This position requires a 20% travel commitment, encompassing both domestic and international, including onshore and offshore locations. The role demands adaptability to varying travel demands, with an expectation of extended periods away from the primary work location. Prospective candidates should be prepared to fulfill these travel obligations as an integral aspect of the position's responsibilities.
