Development (Senior) Expert, R&D - Fuel Injection Concepts

Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians - put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä's purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

The Marine Industry is one of the hardest to abate sectors. For this reason, Decarbonisation of shipping will require Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) that will operate on Future Fuels for many more years to come. It is now the most fascinating time to conduct R&D on ICEs and contribute to the development of marine engines that will be on ships sailing in 2050 and beyond.

We are therefore looking for a Development Expert/Senior Development Expert, R&D - Fuel Injection Concepts  to join Wärtsilä’s 2-Stroke Engines Future Fuels team, on a permanent basis. Location of the function could be in one of Wartsila’s locations, such as in Switzerland (Frauenfeld), Italy (Trieste) or Denmark (Copenhagen), where other members of the team are already based, with flexible remote working options. The function will report to the General Manager, Future Fuels. We will consider this role as either Expert or Senior Expert dependant on experience and assessment.

Prime focus will be the definition of fuel injection concepts for use in advanced combustion systems of fuels such as (but not limited to), Biofuels, Methanol, Ethanol and Ammonia, for 2-stroke slow-speed marine engines. This high priority programme is an excellent vehicle for internal career growth

What you will be doing?

Your main responsibilities will be:

•    Conduct CFD simulations in fuel injection systems with a clear understanding of injector and pump construction. Perform 1D-modelling of hydromechanical systems (considering fluid flow dynamics etc) to complement the CFD work
•    Define concepts of fuel injection systems for different liquid and gaseous fuels, such as biofuels, methanol, ethanol and ammonia, and determine the technology's feasibility
•    Collaborate closely with Technology & Engineering teams to evolve the concept (TRL 1-3) into technology (TRL 4-6)
•    Specify and follow-up on testing of new components, either on test rigs or on the test engine
•    Lead, cooperate and coordinate projects with external laboratories and research institutions, and consult with Regulatory officials/representatives when needed

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

•    M.Sc or Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent (focusing on fluid mechanics or similar)
•    Excellent understanding of Fluid dynamics, Thermodynamics and Hydraulic/Pneumatic systems
•    Sufficient work experience in the development of Fuel Injection Systems
•    Experience in using opensource CFD code OpenFoam (or other commercial code), and 1D-modelling experience of hydromechanical systems using GT-Suite (or other tool)
•    Exposure to working with NX CAD modelling software and Teamcenter PLM software would be considered as an added advantage to this position

You will fit when you have / are:

•    Experience with internal combustion engines or similar fields is preferential
•    Team player, and able to work independently
•    Have total fluency in English, both written and verbal
•    Are able to work in a multi-cultural environment
