Materials (Senior) Expert - Future Fuels

Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians - put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä's purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

The Marine Industry is one of the hardest to abate sectors. For this reason, Decarbonisation of shipping will require Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) that will operate on Future Fuels for many more years to come. It is now the most fascinating time to conduct R&D on Internal Combustion Engines (ICEs) and contribute to the development of marine engines that will be on ships sailing in 2050 and beyond.

We are therefore looking for a Materials Expert – Future Fuels  to join Wärtsilä’s 2-Stroke Engines Future Fuels team, on a permanent basis. Location of the function could be in one of Wartsila’s locations, such as in Switzerland (Frauenfeld), Italy (Trieste), or Denmark (Copenhagen), where other members of the team are already based, with flexible remote working options. The function will report to the General Manager, Future Fuels.

Prime focus will be the definition and analysis of engine components and materials using also Finite Element Analysis (FEA), to be used in advanced combustion systems of fuels such as (but not limited to), Biofuels, Methanol, Ethanol and Ammonia, for 2-stroke slow-speed marine engines. This high profile program is an excellent vehicle to grow your career internally.

What you will be doing?

Your main responsibilities will be:

•    Selection of Materials, Stress & Thermal Analysis of engine components (eg combustion chamber, fuel injection systems, etc), in collaboration with engine designers
•    Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of components under static and dynamic conditions (LCF and HCF, etc)

•    Explore and assess the applicability of existing and new materials for components, for engines to operate on future fuels (Methanol, Ethanol, Ammonia, etc)
•    Validation of prototype components, failure investigations, Root Cause Analysis (RCA)
•    Collaborate closely with inhouse Materials laboratories (in Vaasa and Trieste)
•    Lead, cooperate and coordinate projects with external laboratories and research institutes, and consult with Regulatory officials/representatives when needed

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

•    M.Sc or Ph.D in Material Science and Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering (focus on Materials)
•    Proficiency with FEA tools (ANSYS or other) for both, static and dynamic simulations
•    Good knowledge and experience in materials, heat treatment methods and tribology
•    Experience in material investigation methods (metallography, microscopy, NDT, mechanical / corrosion / wear testing)
•    Exposure to working with NX CAD modelling software and Teamcenter PLM software would be considered as an added advantage to this position

You will fit when you have / are:

•    Experience with internal combustion engines or similar fields is preferential
