Project Manager

A safer, low-carbon shipping industry is underpinned by data sharing. We at Wärtsilä Voyage are creating the digital infrastructure needed to enable high-performing maritime logistics. Through our world-leading Smart Marine portfolio, we support our customers in their efforts to ensure secure, highly energy-efficient and cost-effective marine operations.

Wärtsilä is on a mission to enable sustainable societies with smart technology. As we change course towards a cleaner, smarter maritime future, we’re looking for top talent to join our team. Are you ready to join the Voyage?

Ever wondered why you still associate navigation with a pair of binoculars in the hands of an ancient mariner? Because for decades the poor chap hasn’t been given better tools at Wärtsilä Voyage we believe it is dire time to do so now! That’s why we need your courage and curiosity to help with nothing less than trying to fast-forward an industry to a smarter, safer and more sustainable way of working.

In the location of Hamburg our thoughts are revolving around smarter navigation systems, better decision making and ultimately building the road into a yet-unknown future. We see this future impacted by autonomous technologies, remote control solutions, making more sense out of data and empowering ship’s crews and operators. Here we envision an industry enabled to yield better results out of their day to day work by putting smart technology to work.

To this behalf we have started a number of long-term and high profile development projects on topics where we believe they will significantly contribute to the success of Wärtsilä Voyage.

Your job as a Project Manager will be to look after one or more of these projects. These are dealing with the wider field of navigation systems, detection and positioning problems through various sensors but equally with classic automation & control solutions. All this is flavoured with a few grains of adventure which naturally comes along in the domain of big ships and the high seas. Your sparring partners will be government bodies, port authorities, industry partners, shipping people, commercial decision makers and not the least a bunch a great colleagues from all over the world.

Your tasks will be
• Day-to-day project management, tracking its progress, identify the bottlenecks while steering along the waypoints in the project plan and balancing the needed resources, all this with a keen eye on the budget
• Liaising between the different partners, internally and externally
• Providing technical expert knowledge into the project in the fields of system architecture, interfacing and on-board installation
• Reporting internally about project progress
• Reporting externally on project progress and expenditures towards the public co-funding bodies
• Documentation and preparation for productization towards project end
• Supporting with installation, commission and prototyping ashore but every now & then on board an oceangoing cargo ship
• Liaising with the regulatory bodies with an aim of achieving an “Approval in Principle” at the end of the project

You will succeed in this role if you can contribute the following
• Technical education in the field of communication technology, electronics, mechatronics, automation or similar
• Organized, structured and not shy of numbers if they represent money instead of engineering units
• Previous project management experience is essential
• A degree of enthusiasm and affection to the maritime world and merchant ships
• A hands-on attitude when it comes to making things happening on board ships
• The curiosity and ambition to push the boundaries of the achievable closer towards the boundaries of the imaginable
• Fluent English is a must, a good degree of German language capabilities is highly desired

You can expect
• To be part from the beginning of what we think is a major transformation of shipping on the long run
• Support from a multi-disciplinary team of experts in their field
• Exposure to some of the most exciting developments in the field of navigation and automation which the maritime domain has on offer
• A positive working environment which perceives technology as an opportunity and not a threat
• to get in touch with people worldwide, as we have colleagues all over

Please apply for this role by 24th of January, 2021.
