We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?
Wärtsilä is a global maritime technology leader with a long track record of marine innovation. Our navigation solutions support safe, compliant and efficient voyages by connecting onboard navigation, voyage planning, nautical data and shore-side fleet operations. Navi-Sailor is one of the industry’s most recognised ECDIS product families, trusted by mariners worldwide and built on the legacy of the world’s first type-approved ECDIS.
We are looking for an experienced Product Lead to own and develop our onboard navigation product portfolio, including Navi-Sailor ECDIS/MFD, passage planning, and onboard–shore connectivity. In this role, you will influence how professional mariners plan and execute safe voyages and how Wärtsilä connects onboard navigation with voyage data and fleet operations.
The preferred location for this role is Hamburg, Germany or Helsinki, Finland.
This is a senior product management role with a strong focus on product development, product lifecycle ownership and market fit. Reporting to the Head of Product, Navigation and Voyage Data, you will own product direction, roadmap and requirements for the assigned navigation products, while supporting the Head of Product in shaping portfolio strategy, long-range planning and investment priorities. You will translate customer, regulatory, operational and commercial needs into clear product direction, work closely with Agile R&D and engineering teams, and ensure that our navigation solutions remain safe, compliant, competitive and ready for the S-100 era.
The role also supports product success beyond development by helping ensure effective go-to-market execution, sales enablement, marketing, training, documentation, distributor readiness and customer support. We are looking for a candidate with solid product management experience, strong ownership mindset and clear ability to work with Agile R&D teams.
Deep maritime domain understanding is highly valued. Practical bridge experience, ECDIS knowledge, nautical cartography expertise and familiarity with maritime regulatory frameworks are strong advantages.
What you will be responsible for:
Product management of Wärtsilä’s onboard navigation products and services, including:
- Own product outcomes, product direction, roadmap and prioritised requirements for assigned navigation products, from discovery and development to launch, maintenance and end-of-life planning.
- Support the Head of Product in navigation portfolio strategy, long-range planning, business cases, business models, pricing logic and investment proposals in alignment with Navigation and Voyage Data priorities.
- Translate customer, operational, regulatory and commercial needs into clear product direction and work closely with Agile R&D, engineering, UX, quality and certification teams.
- Use market, customer, service, product performance and product economics data to guide roadmap decisions, prioritisation trade-offs and continuous product improvement.
- Monitor relevant maritime technology, competitor and regulatory developments, including ECDIS, MFD, ENC/S-100, cyber resilience and related IMO, IEC and IHO requirements.
- Ensure release and go-to-market readiness, including product marketing, launch planning, sales enablement, distributor readiness, training, documentation and customer support preparedness.
- Provide expertise in selected customer, distributor and internal discussions, working closely with the wider Product team, including Product Lead, Data.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Relevant degree or equivalent professional background in maritime navigation, software, product management, business or a related field.
- Solid understanding of navigation, bridge operations and maritime regulatory environment; ECDIS, passage planning, ENC/cartography or marine electronics knowledge is highly valued.
- Deck officer, navigator, ECDIS trainer or similar practical maritime background is a strong advantage.
- Strong English communication skills and willingness to travel for customer, distributor, industry and internal meetings.
- 4+ years of experience in product management, product ownership or a closely related role, preferably with maritime, regulated, software or hardware-software products.
- Proven experience defining requirements, managing roadmaps, prioritising development work and collaborating with Agile R&D or engineering teams.
- Experience in maritime navigation, bridge systems, ECDIS, voyage planning, nautical data, vessel performance or fleet operations is strongly preferred.
- Experience contributing to product strategy, business cases, business models, product economics, release readiness, go-to-market activities or sales enablement.
- International customer, distributor, service or cross-functional team experience is beneficial.
- Strong product thinking, with the ability to balance customer value, safety, compliance, technical feasibility, product economics and business impact.
- Analytical and commercially aware, able to obtain and use data insights to support product outcomes, roadmap decisions and prioritisation trade-offs.
- Collaborative team player who can lead without direct authority and work effectively with Product, R&D, sales, service, marketing and support teams.
- Clear communicator with a pragmatic, customer-oriented approach and genuine interest in safe, compliant and efficient navigation.
Why this might be for you:
If you have strong product management experience and a solid understanding of maritime navigation, this role offers an opportunity to take real ownership of products used by professional mariners worldwide and contribute to the next generation of digital navigation, including the S-100 transition and closer integration between onboard systems and shore-side operations.
