Senior Design Engineer

The Design Engineering team are looking to welcome an enthusiastic and resourceful

 

Senior Design Engineer

 

to join our dynamic team in a permanent position located in Havant, UK. This is an exciting opportunity to work on all manner of vessels within the Naval & Commercial markets with a focus on military applications.

 

As Senior Design Engineer, your work will focus on these responsibilities:  

 

  • Lead, create and support concept design and technical specification, configuration and support activities for shaft line products and systems.
  • Lead, create/follow work breakdown structure for shaft line projects.
  • Set team schedule, deadlines, objectives and ensure the quality of the deliverables using company’s tools and processes.
  • Oversee day-to-day operation and tasks and report progress to line manager(s) and/or project manager(s).
  • Customer, supplier and other third-party liaison.
  • Lead, create and support calculation and analysis of shaft line equipment and system.
  • Lead, create and support drafting and 3D modelling tasks using company software.
  • Lead, create and support design validation and first of class testing of relevant products and systems.
  • Provide technical knowledge to purchasing processes.
  • Maintain compliance within all relevant data control requirements.
  • Lead, develop and support shaft line team processes.
  • Developing own knowledge of internal tools, processes and systems.

 

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:  

 

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
  • A proven technical background within Marine Design Engineering, ideally in marine shaft line design and analysis.
  • Relevant knowledge of shaft line equipment and systems.
  • Proven background within mechanical and structural design and analysis.
  • Experience using relevant shaft line commercial and defence standards and Class rules, regulations and guidelines.
  • Experience and relevant knowledge in shaft line analysis including, alignment, vibrations (all types) analysis (free, forced, damped, undamped), and fatigue analysis.
  • Experience and understanding of the shaft line failure modes and hazards.
  • Knowledge of the marine / shipbuilding industry.
  • Effective communicator with both internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • Sound analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a structural and methodical approach to work tasks.
  • Fluency in the English language, both verbal and written.

 

Required Engineering tools/packages experience:

 

  • Experience using CAD (Solid Edge or similar)
  • Experience with Office tools
  • Experience with shaftline calculation tools (i.e., ShaftDesigner, Nauticus Machinery or similar)
  • Experience or knowledge of MathCAD, Matlab, etc
     

Required Skills:

 

  • Experience of mechanical and structural calculation (hand calcs and FE analysis)
  • Experience or familiar with shock calculations
  • Experience with standards, including defence standards (def-stans, mil-std,etc)
  • Experience with Class rules (i.e., LR, etc)

 

Please be advised, the successful candidate must be able to achieve the appropriate security clearance level for this role.

 

In this role, some travel is required to meet with our customers around the world. Thus, we hope you to be ready to travel approximately 60%, even though most of the meetings are held virtually.
