Junior Data Scientist

We are seeking a Junior Data Scientist to join our Strategy team. In this role, you will play a key part in enabling data-led decision making across Wärtsilä Marine by transforming diverse datasets into actionable insights. Your work will support strategic analysis, business planning, and innovation across a wide range of domains—from market intelligence and operational performance to customer behaviour and emerging trends.

 

Location of the position is preferably Helsinki, Vaasa, Turku (FI) or Trieste (IT). This position is temporary with a possibility for a permanent contract. The position holder reports directly to the Vice President, Strategy.

 

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including software developers, to design and implement data-driven strategies
  • Partner with domain experts to identify opportunities for value creation through data insights
  • Analyse large datasets to uncover trends, patterns, and opportunities
  • Rapidly prototype dashboards, visualizations, and performance metrics to support strategic decisions
  • Conduct descriptive analytics and build predictive models to forecast outcomes and support business planning
  • Oversee the deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of predictive models on Wärtsilä platforms
  • Contribute to the development of advanced business intelligence tools using both structured and unstructured data
  • Support top management with ad-hoc and recurring data analysis

 

 

Required Qualifications:

 

  • Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • Proven experience in data science, including statistical modelling, data engineering, and visualization
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Power BI is a plus
  • Solid understanding of statistics and data analysis techniques
  • Experience with SQL and writing complex queries is a plus
  • Knowledge of the maritime industry is highly desirable
