We are looking for a Tech Lead, whose focus will be Wärtsilä’s new customer facing portal, MyWärtsilä. Our new portal will offer an extensive range of products and services to our customer base, and making the right technology choices is fundamental to its success.

The preferred location for this position is Helsinki, Finland, however Vaasa and Turku are also possible. Our teams typically work in hybrid mode.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Tech Lead, Software Development, you will guide the technical direction of our B2B customer portal, the principal digital touchpoint for our global customer base. You will work hands-on with a team of experienced developers while serving as the architectural anchor for our modern MACH-based landscape.

This is a hybrid role: part engineering excellence, part architectural thinking, part stakeholder collaboration. You’ll translate commercial and customer requirements into actionable technical designs, ensure alignment towards other product and technology teams within the organisation, and safeguard the long-term maintainability of our digital platform.

To succeed in the position, you are seen by colleagues as an expert in your field, and you show a passionate interest and attitude towards cloud native, API-first development.

You will be working as a part of a skilled Platform Engineering and Developer Services team with a diverse expertise set.

These will be your key responsibilities:

  • Acting as the Tech Lead for the MyWärtsilä customer portal.
  • Leading and mentoring the development team in building scalable, secure, and modular service powering the portal.
  • Defining and upholding architectural standards in line with MACH principles, ensuring services remain composable, API-driven and cloud-ready.
  • Working closely with the Product Owner(s) to translate customer and business needs into clear technical specifications, system designs, and implementation plans.
  • Collaborating with technical and non-technical stakeholders across the organisation to ensure alignment and capture new opportunities for cross-product collaboration.
  • Owning the overall technical quality of the portal, from code reviews and CI/CD practices to reliability, performance, observability and security.
  • Driving discovery and feasibility assessments for new features, integrations and platform improvements.
  • Ensuring documentation, architecture diagrams and API contracts are consistently maintained and communicated.
  • Championing modern engineering practices, including DevOps, testing automation, event-driven design and incremental delivery.
  • Fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

To be able to succeed in the position, we expect you to have:

  • Proven experience from a similar, stakeholder-facing role
  • Several years of experience in both back-end and front-end software development
  • Proficient in the use of AI in the area of software development, both best practice and anti-patterns
  • Strong skills in technologies such as React, Python, JavaScript-based frameworks, GitHub and AWS
  • Strong problem-solving skills with an interest in leadership
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Experience in ownership of software architecture and strategic technical decision-making
  • Experience in ensuring best practices in software development to support long-term growth
  • Experience in Agile ways of working
  • Fluency in English

As an ideal candidate, you would have:

  • Self-driven, analytical and goal-focused, with a 'can do' attitude
  • Knowledge of integration technologies (e.g. DynamoDB, SQL, NoSQL, REST, GraphQL etc)
  • Experience in Kubernetes, microservices and serverless technologies
  • Experience in AWS and/or Azure platforms
  • Good knowledge of Devops practices
  • Keen interest in new frameworks and programming languages
  • A thorough understanding of how technology choices influence the user experience

The following would also be seen as an advantage:

  • Experience in working as SCRUM Master
  • Experience in Atlassian toolset
