We are seeking a DATA SCIENTIST to join our growing software team with most of the team located in our software development center the Washington, DC metropolitan area, specifically in Herndon, Virginia, USA. The desired location for this position is Herndon VA USA.  Other possible locations are: Fort Lauderdale FL USA, Houston TX USA, Emeryville CA USA, Helsinki Finland, or Vaasa Finland.

 

To be our ideal candidate, you will have five years relavent experience and be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. You should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth. 
 

As a Data Scientist you will assist in the development of simulation tools, forecasting methods, and performance monitoring and analytics for energy systems in Python. The role will be an integral part of the Simulation and Data Science team in a Research and Development role, working to accelerate the development of our software capabilities while supporting customer facing products and simulation efforts.

 

As a Data Scientist you will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Develop and electrical and physical models of lithium-ion batteries.
  • Develop statistical models to predict and monitor energy storage system performance.
  • Apply lab-based learnings to field data for prognostic recommendations and problem identification.
  • Implement, test, and validate models with field data.
  • Report and monitor on-going lab testing.
  • Work with university partnerships to implement new IP and keep track of status.
  • Write documentation on algorithm and model improvements to clearly communicate the structure of new methods and implementations, including justification.
  • The candidate must be able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities.

 

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in physics, mathematics, engineering, or related sciences.
  • Experience with numerical methods including differential and partial differential equation solvers.
  • Expertise in statistical analytics including regressions and machine learning techniques
  • Proficiency in Python as a programming language (2+ years)
  • Track record of a career trajectory towards and in software engineering
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion battery simulation techniques or electrical power systems engineering is a plus

 

Desired Characteristics

  • An academic concentration on renewable energy. 
  • Work or academic experience in the energy industry. 
  • Prior experience with production systems running advanced statistical algorithms and machine learning
  • Experience with open-source analytic and data munging software.
  • Familiar with large distributed datasets for high-speed computing.
  • Strong leadership record with active participation in renewable energy associations, forums, clubs, or groups.
