Electrical Lab Technician

Wartsila is looking for an Electrical Lab Technician to join our team. As an Electrical Lab Technician, you are to conduct day to day operation of our electrical lab to support engineering activities that involve high-capacity Li-Ion batteries, power electronics, breakers, relays, transformers, power meters and controllers. The role will be part of the Hardware Engineering team. The team is responsible for the development of Wartsila’s integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) products. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

 

The location for this position is Wärtsilä office in Herndon, VA.

 

Responsibilities
•    Set up and wire up test equipment according to engineering designs, user manuals, safety guidance and under senior engineers’ directions.
•    Assist in operating equipment and conducting tests.
•    Assist in the writing up test plans and test reports.
•    Assist in the development of lab layout. Procure, organize, and maintain lab tools and fixtures.
•    Conduct orientation of employee and contractors in regards to safety and environmental practices
•    Apply and enforce electrical safety practices. Support with the execution of safety, health, and environment inspections and safety walks throughout the location.
•    Prepare and coordinate building maintenance, inspections and facility status for compliance with corporate guidelines.
•    Generating and oversight of purchase requisition and purchase orders in company purchasing portal.
•    Able to work with external vendors coordinating work within the facility
•    Coordinate shipments (send/receive/pack/unpack equipment) within the facility and help managing inventory in the warehouse. Maintain tracking systems for all incoming and outgoing shipments of the location
•    Maintain all local tooling calibration within the company tracking system. 

 

Qualifications
•    Strong grasp of electrical fundamentals (Ohms law, etc.)
•    Experience in wiring electro-mechanical systems
•    Proficiency with a wide range of hand/power tools and equipment such as soldering irons, crimp tools, hot air soldering guns, pliers, wrenches
•    Ability to read electrical wiring diagrams
•    Ability to operate forklift
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, MS Teams, Excel, Word etc.) 
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills
•    Desire to work in a fast-paced international, multi-cultural company.

 

Physical Requirements: 
•    Able to stoop, stand, bend, climb, kneel: up to 40% of time 
•    Able to walk: up to 25% of time 
•    Able to sit: up to 75% of time
•    Able to lift and carry: up to 20 lbs, up to 25% of time

 

Nice to have
•    Experience with industrial automation systems
•    Experience with high voltage systems
