Electronics Engineer

Wärtsilä Energy Business is looking for a Electronics Engineer for the Energy Storage & Optimization business.  The role will be part of the Hardware Engineering team. The team is responsible for the development of Wartsila’s integrated Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) products. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

 

This is a hybrid position located at the Wärtsilä office in Herndon, VA. This role will be a hybrid position, requiring the successful candidate to be onsite at least four days per week.

 

Responsibilities

  • Support electrical development of Battery Management System (BMS) for grid energy storage systems through full product lifecycle from concept to production release.
  • Create and modify electrical design specifications, schematics, and one-line diagrams for Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) and electrical wiring assemblies.
  • Knowledgeable about PCB layout for complex, high voltage board designs – design rules, placement, routing, and file generation.  Not required to perform board layout, but huge plus. 
  • Identify and select electrical components (power and battery management ICs, semiconductors, fuses, relays, connectors, etc.) to be used in new designs.
  • Develop and perform hands-on testing procedures for validation of PCB designs and battery subsystems in the lab.
  • Evaluate and perform analyses (de-rating, FMEA, DFM, etc.) for compliance to relevant industry standards such as IPC 9592, UL9540, UL1973, and IEC 62368. 
  • Develop and maintain product documentation such as manuals, application notes, and technical specifications. 
  • Assist with maintaining electrical component and design documentation databases.
  • Work with cross functional teams to integrate electronic design packages into the system, including other electrical, mechanical, validation, product manufacturability, and software development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline (MS a plus)
  • 5+ years of electronic circuit development experience (analog, digital, and mixed domain design)
  • Strong knowledge of micro-electronic circuit design concepts
  • Well-versed in the use of lab test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, etc.
  • Basic understanding of industrial communication standards such as CAN, Ethernet, I2C, SPI, etc.
  • Expertise in the design of Printed Circuit Board design and layout best practices, experience with Altium Designer preferred
  • Experience working with high voltage systems (1500VDC) and high voltage circuit design is a plus
  • Experience with power systems, energy storage and renewable energy is a plus
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Team player attitude internally and externally
  • Willing to travel 20% of the time if not located within commuting distance of Herndon, VA.
