Embedded Systems Engineer - Battery Management Systems

Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization, a leading battery energy storage integrator, is seeking an experienced and motivated Embedded Systems Engineer to join our team with a minimum 7 years of experience in embedded systems engineering for Battery Management systems. This exciting opportunity will allow you to contribute with your knowledge and passion in the development of cutting-edge technologies to aid on the Wärtsilä’s vision towards a 100% renewable energy future.

Main responsibilities

• Create, develop, and maintain product-level models in Matlab/Simulink that will be used to generate production code for Battery Management Systems (BMS)

• Implement, simulate and test BMS mathematical algorithms, machine learning and AI solutions for battery systems.

• Support system software architecture, design, verification, and validation within a continuous development, integration, and automated testing framework

• Support interface and middleware efforts to integrate model-based generated code with embedded hardware drivers.

Educational Background/Requirement

• Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related field

Required Technical Skills:

• Experience with Model-based design of Embedded Systems using Matlab/Simulink is a must

• Proficiency in systems engineering principles, requirements gathering, analysis, simulation, verification, and validation.

• Familiarity with Model-Based Systems Engineering tools for development of embedded software.

• High-level Languages: Working familiarity with Python.

• Experience programming and using Hardware in the Loop (HIL) systems

• Software Tools: Practical usage of software management tools like Git, Bitbucket, and Jira

• Documentation: Experience generating technical documentation and potentially authoring internal or external publications

Desired Technical Skills

• Deep understanding and experience with battery management systems. Including advanced algorithms for SOC and SOH estimation, as well as excellent understanding of cell balancing approaches. Control systems experience is a plus.

• Battery Management Systems experience for stationary and grid-connected applications a plus

• Experience programming microcontrollers in C/C++ a plus

• Experience with test automation tools a plus,.

• Familiarity with Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS)

• Working knowledge of safety and reliability standards like IEC 61508, ISO26262 and reliability methodologies such as Fault Trees, RBD, STPA, and FMEA.

• Familiarity with Communication Protocols: such as RS485, CAN, MODBUS TCP, OPC UA, Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, and HTTP is preferred.

• Experience with Agile development practices and principles is a plus.
