Functional Safety and Compliance Engineer

Wartsila is looking for a Functional Safety and Compliance Engineer to join our team. As a Functional Safety and Compliance Engineer, you will play critical role in ensuring that our products and systems meet the highest safety standards and regulatory requirements. The role will be part of the Hardware Engineering team. The team is responsible for the development of Wartsila’s integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) products.

 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

 

Preferred location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä office in Herndon, VA. You could also work remotely, in Canada Eastern or Central Time Zones and the United States except the following states (NY, CA, CO, WA.)

 

Responsibilities:

  • As a Functional Safety and Compliance Engineer you will lead functional safety design and compliance initiatives of battery management systems and battery energy storage systems.
  • Primary responsibility will be to collaborate with engineering team to define and implement functional safety requirements and strategies throughout the product development process.
  • Coordinate creation of functional safety processes and documentation in accordance with IEC 61508 or UL 60730-1.
  • Assess functional safety documents to judge safety compliance, identify issues and the need of further safety analyses.
  • Lead the effort for functional safety compliance with regulators and work closely with engineers and test staff to verify and validate systems.
  • Lead product certification programs with Nationally Recognized Testing Labs (NRTL’s) such as CSA, Intertek, UL etc.  
  • In charge of overall compliance process of BESS products from planning, testing to certification to ensure they are compliant with relevant applicable standards such as UL 9540, UL 1973, IEC 62933, IEC 61439, and codes such as NFPA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69. 
  • Define, plan, coordinate, perform and supervise certification testing on site or at third party testing facility.
  • Lead assessment of BESS products for CE mark and maintain technical files. 
  • Resolve non-conformances found during product evaluations in collaboration with product development team.
  • Support lab team with product verification/validation testing.
  • Evaluate product changes and impacts on compliance and certification.
  • Maintain product NRTL file including critical component list.
  • Represent Wartsila at the standards technical panels related to functional safety and battery energy storage systems.
  • Stay up to date on all relevant standards and regulations, and work closely with engineering team to ensure that products are designed, manufactured, and installed to comply with them.
  • Address customer inquiries regarding product compliance and certifications.
  • Conduct educational sessions on functional safety and compliance topics for interdisciplinary teams.

 

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science or a related field; graduate degree preferred.
  • 8+ years of experience in compliance/certification engineering preferably in the field of functional safety and battery energy storage.
  • Proven experience in functional safety compliance, with experience designing hardware and embedded software for a product that follows with at least one of the following standards: IEC 61508, UL 60730-1, ISO 26262, UL 991, UL 1998, ISO 13849.
  • Experience with relevant standards and codes including UL 9540, UL 1973, IEC 62933, IEC 61439, IEC 61508, NFPA 855, UL/IEC 62368 is highly preferred.
  • Certification in functional safety (e.g. CFSE, CFSP or FS Engineer) is required.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of functional safety practices and principles of functional safety assurance, hazard & risk assessment.
  • Experience with functional safety analysis, such as FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis), FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), DFA (Dependent Failure Analysis)
  • Deep knowledge of UL certification process, CE directives, especially Low Voltage and EMC Directives.
  • Experience developing and implementing compliance programs, policies, and strategies.
  • Experience with product testing, proficiency in report writing, analysis, and compliance procedures.
  • Hands on experience with testing and evaluating electrical equipment to safety standards.
  • Problem solving and innovative mindset.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, and vendors in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Team player attitude.
  • Willing to travel 25% of the time.
