Manager, GEMS DevOps

Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) is the leading global energy storage optimizer. Our mission is to deliver integrated energy solutions that build a resilient, intelligent, and flexible energy infrastructure - unlocking the way to an optimized renewable future. By integrating renewables, energy management technology, and storage with traditional energy resources, we reinvent clean energy production from the largest and most complex grids to the most remote and essential microgrids. We play a key role in Wärtsilä’s vision towards a 100% renewable energy future through flexibility, reliability, and integration for a more sustainable world for us all.

Wärtsilä’s Energy Storage & Optimization business unit is looking for a DevOps Engineering Manager to join our growing software team located in our software development center in Herndon, VA, USA. This role will focus on software development, CI/CD pipelines, and overseeing both physical servers and cloud platforms.  Be a key part of our mission to expand the use of reliable renewable energy throughout the world!

As an integral part of our team, you will:

  • Lead our DevOps and Infrastructure team to deliver the next generation energy management system (EMS) software that runs securely in both the cloud and bare-metal hardware at the edge (IoT).
  • Lead a team of engineers while also being an individual contributor. The ratio of time spent is about 50% individual contributor, 20% architecting and planning, and 30% management.
  • Hands on building, securing, and documenting of our zero-trust cloud-based mission-critical production environments and tooling hosting environment.
  • Provide support to the on-site commissioning teams to help with network and server troubleshooting to push customer projects over the finish line.
  • Lead the design of our on-site server rack and equipment that runs our EMS system to control power plants.
  • Provide best-practices guidance to commissioning teams based on our standard solutions to enable their own self-help.
  • Oversee the selection and training of contractors to support on-site commissioning tasks so we can offload day-to-day issues to them allowing our team to focus on product development.
  • Leadership in technology: guide the team on technology selection, software implementation, integration, testing, release, and deployment.
  • Leadership in Agile development processes: facilitate milestone planning, story boarding, daily stand-up meetings, reviews, and retrospectives. Track and communicate team progress and maintain process documents. Ensure the development teams are practicing the Agile principles.
  • Leadership in organization: recruit, mentor, evaluate performance, reward, and help in their career growth.
  • Contribute to the company vision: participate in product road map planning and technology evaluation.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and collaborate on project discussions.
  • Hands on coding using Go, Python, and Bash programming languages.
  • Architect improvements to our secure software deployment environment and networking infrastructure.
  • Guide the selection and implementation of our monitoring, intrusion detection, anti-virus, and persistent threat analysis systems.
  • Contribute to our site-to-cloud architecture, implementation, and management.
  • Coordinate closely with our project-focused Support Operations Center by providing training, operational support, and feature roadmap development.
