Mechanical Engineer, Thermal Management

Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for a Mechanical Engineer – Thermal management for the Energy Storage & Optimization business. The role will be part of the hardware engineering team.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

 

Preferred location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s location in Herndon, VA.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Design thermal management solutions for a wide range of applications including heat load study, equipment selection, duct design, and control system
  • Run simulations and/or perform calculations to determine thermal transfer and heat gain to determine adequacy of thermal management system configuration for given application
  • Manage suppliers and projects to ensure timely program deliverables within budget
  • Demonstrable motivation and ability to solve novel, difficult design problems with tight timing constraints
  • Develop various battery cell test experiments, document procedures, and preform the tests in a lab environment
  • Conduct CFD analysis using Ansys Fluent to investigate innovative thermal cooling solutions for battery systems
  • Create analytical and numerical models using various CFD tools to describe system thermal performance
  • Energy storage system auxiliary load calculation, HVAC sizing and system efficiency improvement
  • Digital Twin development of energy storage system in Ansys software environment - ECM and thermal model generation (1D circuit or ROM)
  • Design mechanical enclosures, racks, parts, and/or features intended to be used in the energy storage industry
  • Design mechanical features of battery module packs
  • Develop and document test procedures, assembly and installation instructions, and other document and system documentation
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and development programs
  • Support manufacturing and system deployment activities by collaborating to resolve issues and ensure products and systems are delivered to specification.

 

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • MS degree required, PHD desired
  • 3-5 years of product development and mechanical engineering experience
  • Experience with Solid works, Inventor, AutoCAD, and Ansys
  • Experience with energy storage systems in preferred
  • Knowledge of manufacturing process and techniques (forming, machining, welding and inspection/testing) used in the manufacture of fabricated metal parts a plus
  • Knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics
  • Willing to travel up to 20% of the time
