Mechanical Engineer - Thermal Management

Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for a Mechanical Engineer – Thermal management for the Energy Storage & Optimization business. The role will be part of the hardware engineering team.

 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

 

Preferred location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s location in Herndon, VA.

 

 

Main Responsibilities:

 

  • Develop and optimize battery module designs to meet specific requirements, such as energy density, power output, thermal management, and safety.
  • Design and develop mechanical, electrical, and thermal components for battery modules, such as cell holders, busbars, cooling systems, and enclosures.
  • Collaborate with cell suppliers to ensure compatibility and integration of cells within the battery module.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to develop and optimize assembly processes, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Support the transition from prototype to mass production, including pilot builds and ramp-up activities.
  • Manage suppliers and projects to ensure timely program deliverables within budget
  • Develop various battery cell test experiments, document procedures, and preform the tests in a lab environment
  • Conduct CFD analysis using Ansys Fluent to investigate innovative thermal cooling solutions for battery systems
  • Digital Twin development of energy storage system in Matlab software environment - ECM and thermal model generation (1D circuit or ROM)
  • Design mechanical enclosures, racks, parts, and/or features intended to be used in the energy storage industry
  • Develop and document test procedures, assembly and installation instructions, and other document and system documentation
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions for customers and development programs
  • Support manufacturing and system deployment activities by collaborating to resolve issues and ensure products and systems are delivered to specification.

 

 

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

 

  • MS degree required, PHD desired
  • 3-5 years of product development and mechanical engineering experience
  • Experience with Solid works, Inventor, AutoCAD, Matlab,Simulink and Ansys
  • Experience with energy storage systems in preferred
  • Strong understanding of electrochemical energy storage principles and lithium-ion battery technologies.
  • Knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics
  • Solving customer’s needs and issues
  • Maintain positive working relationships with customers, peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Team player attitude internally and externally
  • Entrepreneurial drive with hunter mind-set
  • Willing to travel up to 20% of the time
