OT Infrastructure Engineer (Junior-Mid Level)
Location: Herndon, VA (in‑person)
Wärtsilä Energy Storage Business is looking for an OT Infrastructure Engineer to join our growing DevOps & Infrastructure Team in our software development center in Herndon, VA. This role is well suited for a junior‑to‑mid‑level engineer who is interested in building hands‑on experience supporting industrial networks, servers, and secure communications used in power plant Industrial Control System (ICS) environments (non‑nuclear).
You will work alongside senior engineers and product teams to help deploy, operate, and improve OT and IT infrastructure at both the computing edge and in the cloud—contributing directly to systems that enable reliable, renewable energy worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the deployment, configuration, and maintenance of OT and IT infrastructure used in industrial control system environments.
- Assist with network and security projects, including firewall configuration, network segmentation, and system hardening, under guidance from senior engineers.
- Contribute and operate OT workstations, servers, virtualized environments, and supporting infrastructure.
- Participate in security and architecture reviews for OT/ICS systems, learning and applying standards such as IEC‑62443 and SOC 2.
- Monitor systems and assist in troubleshooting network, server, and security issues, escalating complex problems as needed.
- Contribute to incident investigations and post‑incident reviews to help identify root causes and corrective actions.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and configuration records.
- Participate in internal knowledge sharing, training sessions, and operational drills.
Qualifications
- Hands‑on experience with Linux and/or Windows systems, including basic system administration tasks.
- Familiarity with virtualization platforms such as VMware, Proxmox, or Hyper‑V.
- Foundational understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, firewalls).
- Exposure to enterprise or industrial networking and security technologies (e.g., Fortinet, Cisco, Juniper, or open‑source tools).
- Basic scripting or automation experience (Bash, Python, or similar) is a plus.
- Ability to follow documented procedures, learn new technologies, and ask good technical questions.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Experience (Nice to Have)
- Experience working in or supporting industrial, OT, or ICS environments.
- Exposure to the energy, utilities, or industrial automation sectors.
- Familiarity with security monitoring, logging, or SIEM/IDS tools.
- Awareness of cybersecurity standards such as IEC‑62443, SOC 2 or NIST.
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code concepts and languages such as Ansible or Terraform

- This is an on-site position in Herndon, VA.
- This role operates in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment with changing technical requirements.
- You will work closely with team members across multiple time zones, including the US, Europe, and Australia.
- Regular participation in daily team stand‑up meetings (10:30 AM US Eastern) is required.
- Occasional travel may be needed for team meetings or training events.
- Strong English communication skills are required (B2 minimum).
