Role Summary/Purpose

The primary function of this role is to advance the development of our electrical and power systems modeling tools. The Power Systems Intern is expected to show solid theoretical background in dynamic modeling of inverter-based resources and power systems. The intern will mainly focus on dynamic modeling of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in PSCAD or similar software tools and the grid-code and stability analysis of BESS + solar PV systems. The candidate should have strong hands-on experience using PSS/E and EMT tools such as PSCAD for dynamic modeling and simulation. Prior practical experience with modeling inverter-based resources is a must-have. The Intern will be an integral part of the Simulation and Data Science team in a Research and Development role, working to accelerate the development of our software capabilities while supporting new product development initiatives in the field of automated power system optimization.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and leverage dynamic models of battery energy storage systems.
  • Turn data models and algorithms into software and evaluate model effectiveness by conducting simulation tests
  • Work with our hardware testing team to leverage data related to detailed battery system modeling
  • Improve internal models and tools to facilitate rapid product development
  • Write documentation on algorithm and model improvements to clearly communicate the structure of new methods and implementations, including justification
  • Support tasks outside of job description as needed
  • The candidate must be able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, and comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a degree in power systems engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Concrete understanding of electrical engineering principles
  • Experience modeling inverter-based resources
  • Familiarity with PSS/E and PSCAD
  • Can work independently and provide strong leadership

Desired Characteristics

  • Familiarity with code-based modeling in PSCAD, PSS/E, DIgSILENT software
  • Proficiency in Python and Fortran
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow through to complete tasks
  • Clear communication skills for the ability to connect the dots and acquire help from the team as needed
