Power Systems Intern - Spring/Summer 2024

Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization (ES&O) is the leading global energy storage optimizer. Our mission is to deliver integrated energy solutions that build a resilient, intelligent, and flexible energy infrastructure - unlocking the way to an optimized renewable future. By integrating renewables, energy management technology, and storage with traditional energy resources, we reinvent clean energy production from the largest and most complex grids to the most remote and essential microgrids. We play a key role in Wärtsilä’s vision towards a 100% renewable energy future through flexibility, reliability, and integration for a more sustainable world for us all.

Role Summary/Purpose

The primary function of this role is to advance the development of our electrical and power systems modeling tools. The Power Systems Intern is expected to show solid theoretical background in dynamic modeling of inverter-based resources and power systems. The intern will mainly focus on dynamic modeling of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in PSCAD or similar software tools and the grid-code and stability analysis of BESS + solar PV systems. The candidate should have strong hands-on experience using PSS/E and EMT tools such as PSCAD for dynamic modeling and simulation. Prior practical experience with modeling inverter-based resources is a must-have. The Intern will be an integral part of the Simulation and Data Science team in a Research and Development role, working to accelerate the development of our software capabilities while supporting new product development initiatives in the field of automated power system optimization.

The preferred location for this position is Herndon, VA. Remote working is an option once discussed and approved by hiring manager.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and leverage dynamic models of battery energy storage systems.
  • Turn data models and algorithms into software and evaluate model effectiveness by conducting simulation tests.
  • Work with our hardware testing team to leverage data related to detailed battery system modeling.
  • Improve internal models and tools to facilitate rapid product development.
  • Write documentation on algorithm and model improvements to clearly communicate the structure of new methods and implementations, including justification.
  • Support tasks outside of the job description as needed.
  • The candidate must be able to embrace the fast and dynamic environment of a growth stage company, and comfortable with adjusting quickly to changing priorities.

  • Currently pursuing a degree in power systems engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Concrete understanding of electrical engineering principles.
  • Experience modeling inverter-based resources.
  • Familiarity with PSCAD and DIgSILENT.
  • Candidate must be able to work independently.

Desired Characteristics

  • Familiarity with code-based modeling in PSCAD, PSS/E, DIgSILENT software
  • Proficiency in Python and Fortran.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow through to complete tasks.
  • Clear communication skills for the ability to connect the dots and acquire help from the team as needed.
