Product Manager Fire Protection

Wärtsilä’s Energy Storage Inc. (“Wärtsilä”) is looking for a global Product Manager Fire Protection with specialties such as fire protection engineering and/or electrical engineering for the Energy Storage business. This position is within the Product Management team which is responsible for the development and management of Wärtsilä’s integrated battery energy storage systems (BESS) products. The preferred location for this position is Wärtsilä’s office in Herndon, VA or the Toronto area. This role will follow a hybrid work model.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.
As a Product Manager (Fire Protection), you will focus on these responsibilities:
1.Product Management
o Develop and implement comprehensive product strategies for fire and explosion systems in battery energy storage applications.
o Conduct market research and analysis to identify trends, needs, and opportunities.
o Collaborate with Compliance, Verification and other engineering teams to define product requirements and specifications that align with industry regulations and customer expectations.
o Manage the product lifecycle from concept through development, launch, and post launch support.
o Coordinate with marketing and sales teams to create product notes, launch strategies, and product notes.
o Monitor and report on product performance, customer feedback, and competitive landscape to inform continuous improvement efforts.
o Ensure compliance with international safety standards and regulations related to fire protection in energy storage systems.
o Represent the company at industry conferences, seminars, and other events to promote the products and gather insights.
2. System Design & Support
o Provide guidance and support to other engineers on meeting compliance requirements including troubleshooting issues, interpreting test data, and recommending solutions to enhance system safety and reliability.
3. Research & Development Testing
o Support testing of battery energy storage systems (BESS) to ensure compliance with industry standards such as NFPA 855, UL 9540A, UL 9540, etc. This involves assisting with designing and executing test plans, analyzing test results, and iterating product designs to enhance safety and performance.
o Travel to third-party testing laboratories to support and coordinate fire safety testing
4. Regulatory Compliance
o Stay up to date with relevant codes, standards, and regulations to ensure that products comply with these requirements.
To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:
· B.S. in Fire Protection Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field required; graduate degree or PMP certification preferred.
· Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Fire Protection preferred
· 4+ years of applicable experience in fire protection engineering or research in lithium-ion battery energy storage system field is strongly preferred.
· Knowledge of equipment utilized for the prevention, detection, suppression, and mitigation of fire and explosion hazards including sparking, fire alarm, gas detection equipment, water suppression, isolation systems, and explosion venting.
· Working familiarity with NPFA 855, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, UL 9540 and UL 9540A required.
· Experience with multiple mechanical, electrical and controls systems preferred.
· Knowledge of heat flux, sprinkler, NFPA 68/69 modeling experience preferred.
· Knowledge of energy storage technology offerings and suppliers required.
· Familiarity with lithium-ion battery cell, module, unit and full system testing required.
· Experience with fire and explosion investigation is a plus.
· Ability to work on multiple tasks/projects at a time (i.e., will need the candidate to juggle product management efforts and troubleshooting issues with any fire protection system for our product if needed.

· Willing to travel domestically and internationally 30% of the time.
