Senior Embedded Software Engineer

Wärtsilä Energy Storage & Optimization, a leading battery energy storage integrator, is seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join our team with a minimum 8 years of experience in embedded software engineering. This exciting opportunity will allow you to contribute with your knowledge and passion in the development of cutting-edge technologies to aid on the Wärtsilä’s vision towards a 100% renewable energy future. The location for this position is Herndon, VA.
Background/Major:
- Electrical, Computer Engineering, or related field
Desired Technical Skills:
- Embedded System Programming: Experience programming in C, C++, and Assembly for common microcontrollers (ARM-based preferred). Candidates with multi-core microcontroller experience will be given preference
- Working Familiarity with high level languages and scripting like Python
- Software Tools: Practical usage of software management tools like Git, Bitbucket, and Jira. Experience with GNU build tools, cross-compilers.
- Embedded Interfaces: Experience developing low-level device drivers for hardware peripheral interfaces such as SPI, I2C, USART, Ethernet, JTAG, GPIO, ADCs.
- Communication Protocols: expertise in communication and web protocols within the context of embedded systems such as MODBUS TCP, OPC, Ethernet, TCP/IP stacks, and HTTP
- RTOS: Programming experience with Real-time Operating Systems like free-RTOS, embedded Linux
- Safety and Reliability Standards: knowledge of safety standards like IEC 61508 and reliability methodologies such as Fault Trees, RBD, STPA, and FMEA considered a plus.
- Certification experience for safety applications: IEC 61508, or UL 60730-1, in the context of documentation, and implementation of functional safety code, such as periodic self-test to detect errors in hardware components: Memory, CPU, clocks, external components communicating to CPU
- Coding Standards: Experience adhering to coding guidelines and standards like MISRA-C and SEI CERT C.
- Mathematical Computing: experience with MATLAB and related products like Simulink and State flow a plus. Familiarity with frameworks like Embedded Coder from MathWorks.
- Systems Engineering: Understanding of systems engineering principles, requirements gathering, analysis, and validation.
- Test Automation: Experience with software quality assurance including unit and integration test development, and code inspection and reviews.
- Hardware Familiarity: Working knowledge of digital and analog circuits, PCBs, IC datasheet analysis, and usage of hardware testing equipment like oscilloscopes and power supplies.
- Documentation: Experience generating technical documentation and potentially authoring internal or external publications.
- Agile Methodology: Experience with Agile development practices and principles.
- Battery Management Technologies: Understanding of battery management and control systems a plus.

Responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain embedded software solutions for battery management systems (BMS) and interfaces to the Energy Management System (EMS).
- This role will lean towards development of middleware and embedded communication interfaces to higher layer applications and client applications, such as EMS, as well as internal BMS components.
- Support software architecture design, requirements analysis, interface definition.
- Support interface to integrate model-based automatically generated code in embedded platform
- Conduct system validation and verification supported with automated tools.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams for system integration and product certification.
- Ensure and support system reliability and functional safety compliance certification efforts for documentation and development.
- Support network infrastructure development in an embedded system platform over RTOS: Ethernet TCP/IP, Modbus TCP, and work with existing TGCP/IP stack
