Senior Network & System Engineer

Wärtsilä’s Energy Storage & Optimization business unit is looking for a Senior Network Engineer/Sysadmin to join our growing DevOps & Infrastructure Team located in our software development center in Herndon, VA, USA. This position will be hybrid. This role will focus on designing and supporting network architecture, network devices, and network communication security for power plant (non-nuclear) Industrial Control System (ICS) environments both on the computing edge but also in the cloud. Be a key part of our mission to expand the use of reliable renewable energy throughout the world!

 

As an integral part of our development operations team, you will:
•    Contribute to our DevOps and Infrastructure team to deliver the next generation energy management system (EMS) software that runs securely in both the cloud and bare-metal hardware at the edge (IoT).
•    Provide hands on support for building, securing, and documenting our zero-trust cloud-based mission critical production environment.
•    Provide support to the on-site commissioning teams to help with network and server troubleshooting to push customer projects over the finish line.
•    Become a subject matter expert on our customer power plant networks and evolve the networks to fit changing conditions and new customers.
•    Provide best-practices documentation and training to commissioning teams based on our standard solutions to enable their own self-help.
•    Advise the team on network technology selection (both hardware and architecture choices).
•    Contribute to the company vision: participate in product road map planning and technology evaluation.
•    Communicate effectively with customers and collaborate on project discussions.
•    Review network architecture for new sites.
•    Remotely manage industrial firewalls (both in our cloud and at customer sites).
•    Coordinate solving network engineering issues with customer cybersecurity teams.
•    Coordinate on-site network troubleshooting with Wärtsilä’s Delivery and Lifecycle teams.
•    Coordinate updates, maintenance, and licensing with customers for their purchased network components.
•    Work with Wärtsilä’s internal teams to validate, acquire & test new hardware for use in an industrial environment as part of our standard products.
•    Contribute to new product development focused on engineer and operator workstations based on Linux or Windows-based systems.
•    Work closely with other members of the DevOps team to learn about and contribute to cloud and systems administration (90% Linux, 10% Windows).

 

Skills
•    3+ years of TCP/IP networks and experience configuring network equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, VPNs and VLANs. 
•    Experience with power plants or other industrial automation and control systems environments would be extremely helpful.
•    Demonstrated proficiency in Cloud Native technologies (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform), particularly in configuration of VPC networking and firewall rules.
•    Demonstrated proficiency in Linux and Windows system administration.
•    Demonstrated problem solving and communication skills.
•    Strong English language written and verbal communication skills.

 

Other Qualifications
•    Be able to join us in-office at least one day per week in Herndon, VA.
•    B.S. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering (Computer, Electrical, Mechanical), MIS, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
•    Capacity to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, highly technical environment.
