Senior Power System Engineer

We are looking for a Senior Power System Engineer to join our team. The Energy Storage and Optimization business unit of Wärtsilä is the leading provider of energy storage systems and plant control software. Our mission is to enable a cleaner, more intelligent, and distributed energy infrastructure. Headquartered in Herndon, Virginia, we are seeking a Senior Power Engineer to join our team locally or remotely.

 

What will you be doing:

As a Senior Power System Engineer, you will be an integral part of the Simulation and Data Science team in the Research and Development group, working to accelerate the development of our deployed software capabilities.

 

The ideal candidate has:

  • An electrical engineer or electrical engineering PhD
  • 2-10 years of relevant experience.

 

As a Senior Power System Engineer, you will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain system level electrical models, simplified thermal models, and battery circuit models in MATLAB/Simulink or Python.
  • Develop a platform for battery operation simulation and analysis.
  • Support Business Development with technical input and review
  • Participate in battery system and inverter control development.
  • Develop and provide input on control methods and algorithms for conducting steady-state, transient, and dynamic analysis.
  • Develop other advanced integrated control algorithms and simulation software as a part of the R&D team.
  • Integrate GEMS models with models of equipment models including battery PCS, PV inverters, wind turbine inverter and spinning generators.
  • Understands and can articulate a diverse range of operating methods for utility scale electrical power systems, including renewable energy, energy storage, and conventional generation technologies (including any combination of these systems in hybrid configurations).

 


 

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

•    Expertise with MATLAB and Simulink in conducting electrical circuit modeling and simulations
•    Experience with inverters, dc-dc, dc to dc or ac to dc 
•    Experience in thermal
•    Can work independently and provide strong leadership
 

Desired Characteristics:

•    Experience with Python coding is a plus
•    Experience developing UIs for internal departments is a plus
•    Experience with open-source analytic and data mining software.
•    Familiar with large datasets and or timeseries datasets for high-speed computing.
•    Strong technology leadership record with power systems engineering and renewable energy projects.
