Software Engineer

We are seeking a mid-level software engineer to join our growing software team located in our software development center in Herndon, VA, USA. Remote work is available for qualified candidates.



  • As part of Wärtsilä’s ES&O GEMS Software Solutions Team, you will be responsible for contributing to our solutions, backend servers, and code deployment.
  • Help build GEMS into a world class, intelligent power plant and grid controller in order to support the path forward to a 100% renewable energy future.
  • As part of the Solutions Team, you’ll be an innovative contributor that develops and deploys software and control technologies on our GEMS software platform according to our solution standards and project requirements that solves electrical power and energy problems.
  • Participate in an agile development environment.
  • Develop new solutions mainly in Java, but you’ll touch JavaScript and Python from time-to-time. Will need to read a decent amount of electrical engineering documents to understand the design and will develop additional technical documents according to our standards.
  • Will work closely with other electrical, mechanical and software engineers when delivering solutions to projects.
  • Up to 10% of time will travel internationally to help commission the  solution on-site at large solar, wind, energy storage or hybrid power plants.
  • Participate in customer facing discussions, meetings, and project delivery.



  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience with professional front and back-end development.
  • Proficient in Java.
  • Prefer knowledge in JavaScript front-end web development, and NodeJS and/or Python for the backend.
  • Professional expertise in underlying web technologies including HTML, CSS, and vanilla JavaScript.
  • Professional expertise in developing REST and WebSocket APIs.
  • Robust experience working with SQL-based relational databases, NoSQL, or NewSQL.
  • General knowledge of networking, Linux, code testing.
  • Experience with setting up deployment of software and troubleshooting issues.
  • Experience developing complex software projects in commercial product settings.
  • Experience working in an agile development environment using common tools such as JIRA and Git.
  • Ability to embrace a fast-moving environment and comfortable with quickly adapting to changing priorities.


Desired Experience

  • Experience in PostgreSQL, InfluxDB, or TimescaleDB.
  • Performance analysis and tuning for high-throughput data ingestion and aggregation.
  • Docker or other containerized technologies.
  • Experience with setting up system and application monitoring solutions.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in electrical concepts, power grids, renewable or green energy.
  • Grasp of cybersecurity principles and practices in software products.
  • Experience or knowledge of SCADA standards and products.


Educational / Professional Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering (Computer, Electrical, Mechanical), I.T., or equivalent years of industry experience.
