Software Engineering Manager

We are seeking a Manager, Software Engineer to join our growing software team in our software development center in Herndon, VA, USA. This role will follow a hybrid work model.

 

Responsibilities

As part of Wärtsilä’s ES&O software engineering team you will be responsible for the following.

  • Guiding technical decisions.
  • Providing feedback and making suggestions to product roadmaps.
  • Resource and timeline estimation.
  • Contributing features and code to software products.
  • Guide development of a data-centric, rich web platform for data visualization, and advanced analytics.
  • Manage a team of software engineers by creating goals that roll up to business objectives, setting expectations, and individual performance reviews.
  • Participate in an agile development environment.
  • Participate in user experience and usability studies to develop and/or improve the UI design and make complex site operations intuitive.
  • Develop features and other technical documents.
  • Participate in customer facing discussions, meetings, and project delivery.

 

Requirements

  • 8+ years of demonstrated experience with professional back-end development.
  • Experience leading a team of software engineers.
  • Professional expertise in Java (or equivalent language). Proficient in developing core Java applications in the Linux environment involving JVM tuning, multi-threading, and TCP/IP networking.
  • Expert level in object-oriented programming and design patterns; a passion for solving sophisticated problems with clean, elegant code.
  • General knowledge of networking, Linux, code testing.
  • Experience with setting up deployment of software and troubleshooting issues.
  • Experience developing complex software projects in commercial product settings.
  • Experience working in an agile development environment using common tools such as JIRA and Git.
  • Ability to embrace a fast-moving environment and comfortable with quickly adapting to changing priorities.

 

Desired Experience

  • Performance analysis and tuning for low latency processing and communication.
  • Device communication protocols (Modbus, DNP3, OPC UA).
  • Docker or other containerized technologies.
  • Creating and deploying distributed computing solutions.
  • Experience with setting up system and application monitoring solutions.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in electrical concepts, power grids, renewable or green energy.

 

Educational / Professional Requirements

  • B.S. Degree in Computer Science, Engineering (Computer, Electrical, Mechanical), I.T., or equivalent years of industry experience.
