Area Director QEHSS, Americas
The Wärtsilä North America team has a vacancy for an Area Director, QEHSS, Americas
This role leads Health, Safety, Environment, and/or Quality function(s), developing and implementing strategies, policies and programs and ensuring organizational excellence in HSEQ compliance and performance. Reporting into the Vice President, Energy Business Americas the role has accountabilities across the entire Americas region providing services to all Wartsila Marine and Energy Businesses and Support Functions. The role has 6 direct reports and an extended team ( FTE 30+) across multiple countries including site locations.
Key Accountabilities
1. Leads and oversees the Health, Safety, Environment & Quality function(s) within an area, leading the development and execution of HSEQ processes, policies, programs, and guidelines, securing the delivery of high-quality products and services and adherence to all HSEQ standards in alignment with organizational objectives and regulatory requirements. Ensure that all products and services meet the highest quality standards, driving customer satisfaction and continuous improvement.
2. Leads HSEQ teams, providing direction, mentoring and support to ensure high performance and professional development. Provides advice on Health, Safety, Environment & Quality and carries out audits to ensure that organization and external standards on health, safety, environment and quality are met.
3. Engages with internal and external stakeholders to foster a governance framework that emphasizes a culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and quality excellence. Promotes a collaborative approach to integrate Health, Safety, Environment & Quality considerations into business operations and decision-making processes within their responsibility area.
4. Manages Health, Safety, Environment & Quality compliance, mitigating risks and overseeing adherence to all regulations and standards. Proactively updates practices based on changing regulations and ensures all products and services conform to technical specifications and standards.
5. Manages budgeting and resource allocation within their responsibility area, prioritizing activities and being responsible for responsibility area performance.
6. Monitors Health, Safety, Environment & Quality Performance Metrics, reporting on trends and developing action plans for performance improvement. Drives continuous improvement in Health, Safety, Environment & Quality management.
7. Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders including suppliers and clients to ensure procurement and services meet Health, Safety, Environment & Quality standards. Advocates for and ensures the organization provides good standards of service.
8. Leads continuous improvement efforts following the Wartsila Continuous Improvement Model, coaching, facilitating, training and monitoring outcomes.
- Business Impact: Leads activities and develops and implements Health, Safety, Environment & Quality strategies for a Health, Safety, Environment & Quality sub-function, driving organizational Health, Safety, Environment & Quality objectives and strategic alignment.
- Knowledge and Experience: Expert in Health, Safety, Environment & Quality sub-function practices, providing specialized organizational guidance.
- Innovation and Change: Advocates for sub-function system and process advancements, solving intricate Health, Safety, Environment & Quality issues.
- Teamwork and Leadership: Manages cross-functional teams within the sub-function, enhancing Health, Safety, Environment & Quality expertise.
- Communication and Networking: Collaborates with stakeholders to maintain sub-function Health, Safety, Environment & Quality standards and goals.

Requirements
- Relevant bachelors or master’s academic degree (e.g. In engineering, manufacturing or quality).
- 5 – 10 years’ experience in QA and QC in manufacturing, services, or related industrial environment.
- Understanding of different management systems and what is needed from business perspective.
- Track record of leading and facilitating a change in a global multi-functional and cross divisional environment.
- Excellent influencing and communication skills, virtually and in a global environment.
- Positive, hands on and solution oriented working style and an excellent ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with peers and stakeholders.
- English proficiency.
The role will require up to 40% travel and is located in Houston, Texas. It will follow our hydrid policy with 2 days in the office.
