Manager, Market Development

We are looking for a Manager, Market Development to join our Sales & Marketing team for Energy Business in the Americas Region. The preferred location for this position is Houston, TX.

 

What will you be doing

As a Manager, Market Development, you will assess opportunities in markets across North America and help identify prospects for expanding Wärtsilä’s flexible gas generation business. In this role, you will combine technical understanding, market knowledge, and commercial mindset to help position our solutions in evolving energy markets.

 

As a Manager, Market Development, you will focus on these responsibilities:

  • Assess opportunities in markets across North America and identify prospects for opening new markets for Wärtsilä’s flexible gas generation solutions

  • Support the development of utility portfolio transition proposals and recommendations for utility action plans and resource expansion, in collaboration with internal analytical and modelling teams

  • Translate analytical findings and market insights into clear, compelling messages for customers, stakeholders, and internal sales teams

  • Work closely with sales and cross-functional teams to communicate the value and relevance of analytical results to clients and stakeholders

  • Contribute to Wärtsilä’s regulatory advocacy efforts by helping communicate positions to regulatory agencies, utility stakeholders, and other relevant external parties

  • Track wholesale market, transmission, and regional balancing authority policies and procedures, and support responses to regulatory, tariff, and policy developments

  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders including utilities, developers, consultants, commission staff, trade groups, system operators, and transmission providers

  • Prepare reports, matrices, presentations, and other deliverables for internal and external use

  • Coordinate with Wärtsilä’s internal teams to help translate policy and market knowledge into day-to-day commercial and strategic initiatives

  • Communicate the outcomes and implications of designated regulatory agency board meetings and policy discussions

  • Travel up to 25% as part of customer, stakeholder, and market-facing activities

 

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:

  • 5–7 years of relevant experience in energy markets, market development, power systems, utility planning, consulting, regulatory environments, or related fields

  • A solid understanding of how the US power market works, including core power system fundamentals and market drivers

  • Experience interpreting technical or analytical outputs and communicating them clearly to commercial teams, clients, or external stakeholders

  • A commercial mindset with the ability to connect technical and market insights to customer value

  • Familiarity with power system analysis or modelling environments, including tools such as Plexos, SERVM, or similar platforms used in the industry

  • Experience working with data and analytics to support storytelling, recommendations, and decision-making

  • Exposure to regulatory advocacy, market policy discussions, or utility-related stakeholder engagement

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with confidence in presenting complex topics in a clear and practical way

 

It would be a plus if you have:

  • Experience in consulting within the energy or utility sector

  • Familiarity with the language, priorities, and decision-making processes of utility customers

  • Experience working in roles that combine market analysis, stakeholder engagement, and commercial support
