Senior Service Engineer – Site Engineer - BESS & Power Plant Support, Energy Business
The Wärtsilä Energy Business – St. Thomas, USVI team has a vacancy for a Site Engineer – BESS & Power Plant Support.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a technically skilled and adaptable Site Engineer to support the daily operations and light maintenance of a Wärtsilä GridSolv Max battery energy storage system (BESS), while also providing secondary support to co-located Wärtsilä 32 and 34 engine-based power plants. This position is ideal for a candidate with a strong foundation in electrical systems and a willingness to contribute across both renewable and thermal energy platforms.
Primary Responsibilities – GridSolv Max BESS:
- System Monitoring & Inspections:
- Conduct daily walkdowns and visual inspections of GridSolv Max containers.
- Monitor system performance using SCADA and BMS platforms.
- Identify and report system anomalies or alarms.
- Preventive & Light Maintenance:
- Perform and schedule routine maintenance on HVAC units, fire suppression systems, and power distribution panels.
- Replace fuses, inspect battery racks, and ensure all safety systems are operational.
- Troubleshooting & Coordination:
- Respond to minor faults and coordinate with OEM support for escalated issues.
- Assist with firmware updates and system resets as needed.
- Collaborate with utility personnel and contractors during site activities.
- Documentation & Compliance:
- Maintain accurate logs of inspections, maintenance, and system events.
- Ensure compliance with UL9540 and site-specific safety protocols.
Secondary Responsibilities – Wärtsilä Engine Power Plant Support:
- Assist plant technicians with routine inspections and operational checks on Wärtsilä 32 and 34 engines.
- Support troubleshooting of auxiliary systems and gensets.
- Participate in scheduled maintenance activities.
- Monitor engine performance data and report deviations to the plant operations team.
- Ensure coordination between BESS and engine operations during load transitions or grid events.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Energy Engineering.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in energy storage, power generation, or industrial electrical systems.
- Familiarity with containerized BESS, especially Wärtsilä GridSolv Max.
- Basic understanding of reciprocating engine systems and plant operations.
