Embedded Software Engineer - Algorithm Specialist
to join our team working for a better future.
The preferred location for the position is in Leicester, UK.
What you will be doing
This role of an Embedded Software Engineer specializing in Algorithm Development focusing on the research, analysis, improvement, and implementation of algorithms for the processing of data from various sensors, including cameras, radar & lidar. The role also includes all the responsibilities of an Embedded Software Engineer.
Your work will involve developing algorithm simulations and prototypes in Octave and/or Python, with final implementation in
(a) C++ targeted to run on either an embedded platform running embedded Linux or FreeRTOS,or on a PC running windows.
(b) C# targeted to run on a windows platform, usually as part of a service.
As Embedded Software Engineer - Algorithm Specialist, your work will focus on these responsibilities:
- Algorithm Development:
- Work with the Hardware Design Team to understand what algorithms are required and where they would fi t into the sensor S/W.
- Research current academic papers for algorithms that are applicable.
- For the chosen algorithm propose how the algorithm will fit into the sensor application, what inputs are required for it and how the algorithm will be executed.
- Develop simulations and prototypes in Octave and Python to validate algorithm performance
- Present the results of the algorithm prototyping task so that the algorithm's effectiveness can be quantitatively assessed.
- Translate prototypes into efficient and robust implementations in C++ and C# within the sensor application framework.
- Embedded S/W Engineer:
- Develop and maintain multi-threaded, real time, embedded C++ applications for microcontrollers and microprocessors including writing unit tests and participating in code reviews.
- Undertake component testing as necessary as assigned by other members of the development team.
- Contribute to existing software architecture and signal processing algorithms in our products (C++ and C#).
- Establish, maintain, and extend in-depth technical expertise in the latest advances.
- Be able to communicate effectively on technical subjects with other engineering team members
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in S/W development and product development applying them to drive innovation.
- Develop new and maintain existing software applications as part of the engineering team
- System Engineering:
- Participate in system design and architecture discussions to ensure seamless integration of algorithms.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of system-level documentation, including requirements, design specifications, and interface descriptions.
- Assist in the identification and resolution of system-level issues, ensuring that algorithms function correctly within the broader system context.
- Support system testing and validation efforts, including the development of test plans and the execution of system-level tests.
- Documentation and Communication:
- Document algorithm designs, implementation details, and testing procedures.
- Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders to ensure alignment and understanding of project goals and progress.
To be successful in this role, we expect you to have:
- Proficient in C++ and Python or Octave/Matlab.
- Strong understanding of mathematical concepts (linear algebra, probability, statistics etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, teamwork, and can-do attitude.
- Understanding of object orientated design patterns.
- Be highly self-motivated, articulate, with excellent communication skills.
- Be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team as well as can also work independently.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, trends, and best practices in S/W development and product development applying them to drive innovation.
In addition, as an ideal candidate you have:
- Knowledge of C#.
- Knowledge of Agile development practices, source control and continuous integration considered a strong advantage.
- Experience working with sensors (radar, vision, lidar etc.) and developing algorithms to utilise them.
- Knowledge of signal processing techniques and their application would be beneficial.
- Experience in developing real time, embedded software applications using Linux and/or FreeRTOS.
