Senior Service Engineer- 4 Stroke

Purpose of the Position

The Senior Service Engineer is responsible for leading and executing field service activities on Wärtsilä 4-stroke marine engines worldwide. The role requires strong technical expertise, independent execution of complex assignments, and professional customer engagement while ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and operational excellence.

 

Main Responsibilities

  • Lead and execute maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, overhaul, commissioning, retrofit, and inspection activities on Wärtsilä 4-stroke engines and related auxiliary systems.
  • Support vessel dry dockings, sea trials, performance optimization, and emergency breakdown attendance.
  • Diagnose technical issues, perform root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead small field service teams and provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
  • Plan and coordinate service activities to ensure efficient use of manpower, tools, and spare parts.
  • Act as Wärtsilä's technical representative at customer sites and maintain strong relationships with vessel operators, technical management, and shipyards.
  • Prepare accurate service reports and provide technical feedback to internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with Wärtsilä QEHS requirements, Life Saving Rules, customer regulations, and marine industry standards.
  •  Promote a strong safety culture through risk assessments, safe working practices, and reporting of safety observations.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent technical discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of marine propulsion systems and auxiliary machinery.

 

Experience Requirements

Essential

  • 5-8 years of experience in marine engine maintenance, field service, ship management, or engine manufacturing.
  • Hands-on experience with medium-speed 4-stroke marine engines.
  • Experience leading engine overhauls, troubleshooting assignments, and customer-facing service activities.
  • Experience working onboard vessels, in shipyards, or marine service environments.

 

Preferred

  • Experience with Wärtsilä engine products, particularly Wärtsilä 31, 32, 34DF, 46, and 50.
  • Experience in a field service organization.
  • Exposure to dry dock projects, commissioning, and sea trials.
  • Knowledge of engine automation, control systems, and condition-based maintenance practices.
