Data Scientist

Our Digital Product Development (DPD) organization develops digital products for Wärtsilä business units in Marine Power, Marine Systems and Energy. DPD uses a common technology stack to generate insights from operational data, to make for example predictive maintenance or efficiency optimization products such as Wärtsilä Expert Insight. Currently, DPD is growing from around 100 to 120 professionals.


We are looking for an experienced Data Scientist to join our Maintenance & Efficiency Optimization tribe working on solutions for a more sustainable future. You will be part of one of our interdisciplinary scrum teams developing software that will be used for predictive maintenance and performance optimization of our customers’ assets. Your focus area will be the further development of our current data analysis pipeline that allows our equipment experts to effectively use the data of hundreds of ocean-going vessels and power plants to provide insights toward our customers.


Due to the growth of our organisation, we are looking for a Data Scientist who brings software development knowledge and is experienced in creating effective and scalable algorithms. Preferably you also have experience in bringing those to production. In this position you work in close cooperation with the scrum team, internal stakeholders and other data scientist. The preferred location for the position is in Drunen, The Netherlands. (Finland, Helsinki)

As a Data Scientist your work will focus on these responsibilities:  

  • You will participate in the development of our products and services by designing models and developing algorithms to solve real world problems.
  • Participate and support in productising and deploying algorithms.
  • Keep up with advancements in the field of data science and other related fields.
  • You work together with your fellow data scientist located in the Netherlands as well as other locations to share experiences and learn from each other.
  • You collaborate with engineering and domain experts throughout the company and determine how to get value from our data.


To be successful in this role we expect you to have: 

  • You have extensive knowledge of data science which you can demonstrate through your work experience, relevant degrees or personal projects.
  • You are experienced in solving real-world problems with machine learning and have successfully put machine learning models into production in the past.
  • You have basic back-end development knowledge.
  • Our ML systems are written in Python, use libraries like pandas, scikit-learn and TensorFlow. The ML systems run on AWS. Experience with a similar stack is a Must.
  • Experience with applying optimization techniques is a plus.
