Program Manager

Digital Product Development (DPD) develops digital products for Wärtsilä business units  in Marine Power, Marine Systems and Energy. DPD uses a common technology stack to generate insight from operational data, to make for example predictive maintenance- or efficiency optimisation products such as Wärtsilä Expert Insight. DPD is growing from around a 100 to 120 professionals. DPD consists of around 15 agile teams organised in 4 tribes, with clear focus areas, led by Chief Product Owners. The DPD management team, consists of the Director DPD, Chief Product Owners, architects, and the program manager.


The program manager has a three-fold scope. First and foremost the program manager provides transparency to DPDs development programs in terms of development progress, business outcomes and risks towards the Director DPD and business owners. Secondly they will act as a line manager to specialists supporting multiple development tribes, for example in the areas of maritime class compliance and cyber security, securing these specialists contribute as much as possible to the intended business outcomes. Thirdly they may manage feasibility studies, investigating how new development initiatives could be run. The program manager will work closely with the Director DPD, Chief Product Owners and architects. 


We are looking for truly a seasoned program manager with an equally open mind, willing to share their experience with fellow Management Team members. In order not to be bored you should be truly interested in digital and technology.


This a permanent opportunity and would preferably be located at our office in Drunen, Netherlands, however we will also consider Helsinki or Vaasa, Finland as alternative locations.


As a Program Manager your work will focus on these responsibilities


  • Support Director DPD with preparation of steering committee meetings
  • Independently prepare discussion topics, e.g. a problem description, viable alternatives, and a recommendation
    • These topics are often multi-disciplinary in nature, covering digital technology, businesses, strategy, and / or change management
  • Follow and report development progress based on input from Chief Product Owners and architects
  • Follow and report on the roll-out of new digital products to relevant sales and delivery organisations
  • Manage program level risks in close cooperation with other Management Team members
  • Manage specialists supporting multiple tribes, currently covering the areas of maritime class compliance and cyber security
  • Manage and provide visibility towards the program backlog (initiatives not yet on the roadmaps of relevant tribes)
  • Lead feasibility studies clarifying the scope and intend for new development initiatives


To be successful in this role we expect you to have


  • Bachelor or master degree in business or technology
  • Proven experience in program management
  • Proven stakeholder management skills
  • Good presenter of equally good presentation material
  • An open mind with the ability to absorb new values and embrace new ways of working
  • Experience in both Agile as well as traditional organizations
  • Interested in digital technology, AI, etc.
