Leadership Development Lead

About the Position 


As the Leadership Development Lead you will drive our leadership development strategy, with the ambition of turning managers into effective leaders and securing bench strength together with the businesses. You will design a framework and plan to build leadership competencies and behaviours through innovative and modern methods with a focus on blended, virtual, self-directed and experiential leadership development. You will be responsible for developing an effective and impactful leadership model and leadership development strategy to enhance the performance of our leaders from young potentials to senior executives, focused on developing resilient, transformational leaders that navigate business complexity whilst securing a high performing team environment. Through an intimate understanding of the businesses’ needs, you will utilise multiple tools and resources to ensure the effectiveness of leadership development actions on the knowledge and skills of our leaders. You will work closely with HR Business Partners (HRBP) as well as our People Services community to communicate, coordinate, implement and deploy global solutions, to ensure consistency in approach and execution and delivery at the global to local level. 


In this role you will report to the Head of Talent & Leadership. Location for the position is any main Wärtsilä location. 


In this role, you will focus on: 


Strategy & Framework 

  • Identify, develop and implement a leadership model and leadership development strategy to support our each of our businesses in their growth plans  
  • Ensure leadership development strategy is grounded in data and the science of adult learning and development and effective organisational leadership 
  • Build strong working relationships with business leaders and HRBPs to gather insights and develop global leadership development plans and solutions that work at global scale whilst taking into account the varying needs and complexity of our businesses 
  • Develop leadership development initiative portfolio aligned to our leadership model(s) and people priorities 

Needs Assessment 

  • Work closely with business leaders and key HR stakeholders (HRBPs, the wider talent & leadership team, etc.) to scope, assess and diagnose the development needs of our leaders aligned to our overall people priorities and HR strategy  
  • Analyse performance needs, diagnose their root causes, assessing options and recommend leadership development solutions 
  • Development of programs in close collaboration with HRBPs, People Services and selected business leaders and/or subject matter experts
  • Drive regular business reviews, roadmap discussions, program reviews to build effective roadmap 
  • Proactively engage with external providers to determine appropriate tools for program implementation and learning and development delivery methodologies 
  • Supporting e.g. "career pathing" for various types of leaders/ roles and up and comers - including support for high potentials and young potentials 

Analysis & Portfolio Effectiveness 

  • Establish, monitor and regularly report on leadership development metrics: tracking participation/engagement, evaluating effectiveness, measuring ROI, and proactively improving and evolving as we learn from experiences 
  • Conduct follow-up studies of existing leadership development solutions to evaluate and measure results and recommend modifications to leadership development programs as needed 
  • Tell the story around the effectiveness of leadership development strategy and solutions 
  • Develop dashboard and evaluation data ROI tracking 

Thought Leadership & Best Practices 

  • Develop global leadership development playbook including best practice leadership development support processes / tools with impactful and seamless look and feel, e.g. registration, evaluations / testing of knowledge, logistics coordination, pre/post work, facilitator / participant guides 
  • Apply leadership development theory/models, benchmark best practices/trends, and maintain knowledge of cutting-edge approaches in order to deliver sustainable leadership development solutions that drive impact 
  • Keep pace with industry trends and define a roadmap of solutions that promote progressive business practices 
  • Serving as an internal consultant to provide insight and expertise 


You will also work effectively across reporting lines within our Communities of Expertise, across HR and the businesses, in project mode covering both agile and traditional waterfall. 


About You 

To succeed in this role, we are looking for someone with: 

  • Ability to understand business strategies and translate these into actionable and compelling leadership development initiatives, linking solutions to impact 
  • Experience in building leadership models, leadership development strategies and programs 
  • Experience in curriculum design, delivery, and impact assessment of leadership growth solutions 
  • Relevant L&D certifications / accreditations (coaching qualification, adult learning theory, DISC, MBTI, StrengthsFinder, 360 and other equivalent assessment tools) highly desirable 
  • Experience in designing and rapidly implementing new tools and processes and demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects concurrently 
  • Skilled in using/implementing technology relevant to L&D and leadership development (e.g. LMS, MOCC etc.) 
  • Track record in delivering initiatives/ change that influence business performance 
  • Effective in ambiguous environments; able to deliver expected results with minimal direction and guidance. 
  • Systematic problem-solving skills including effective task management and execution 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and experience working with others in high-pressure situations 
  • Demonstrates curiosity and capacity for learning 
  • Outstanding communication and influencing skills 
  • Passion to continuously develop a culture of learning, enthusiasm for a coaching approach, and sharing knowledge to empower others.  
  • Ability to give and receive feedback and course-correct when needed 
  • Seamlessly switching from strategic to operational thinking as needed.
