Wärtsilä Energy Business seeks a Senior Manager, Market & Project Development to join the Growth and Development team in Africa & Europe ("Area").
Finland, the Netherlands, or France are preferred locations for this role. You will report to the Director, Growth & Development, Africa & Europe and should be open to travelling within the Area for approximately 25 to 50% of your time.
The Role of the Growth & Development Team at Wärtsilä Energy
The Growth & Development team drives Market and Project Development to unlock sales opportunities. We analyse country and project power systems, develop market and engagement plans, and support the sales team to define value for tenders and projects. We selectively support project development opportunities, including minority investment and debt structures. We also support the implementation of the Area strategy.
Collaborating closely with our sales & technology teams, we delve deep to identify prime markets, ensuring our solutions resonate perfectly. Our expertise spans two core areas: Market Development, where we embark on meticulous analyses to tailor our offerings and forge a robust link to sales, and Project Development, where we collaborate with sales to spearhead comprehensive initiatives, secure financial backing, and craft compelling value propositions.
While our primary focus remains on unlocking sales opportunities and championing projects, we also adeptly bridge the gap between corporate strategy and its tangible execution in the Area
About the position
The Senior Manager focuses on three core areas:
- People - Grow and develop talent in the Analyst team and ensure they receive all the support required to excel at their jobs. Coach and create growth opportunities for team members.
- Market Development – conducting in-depth power system analyses, customising our offerings, and strengthening the sales value positionin.
- Project Development – Working closely with the Sales teams to develop and deliver strong customer value propositions and projects.
While the Senior Manager’s primary responsibility is on unlocking sales opportunities and supporting project development, the Manager also supports the development and execution of Strategic initiatives and strategy in the Area.

As a Senior Manager, your responsibilities include:
1. Market and Power System Development to:
a. Conduct in-depth market analyses to identify and evaluate opportunities for Wärtsilä technologies and services in the European and African markets.
b. Develop and execute market development strategies for selected countries, identifying opportunities and ensuring our solutions are aligned with market demands.
c. Build and leverage networks with key decision-makers from utilities, policymakers, consultants, project developers, and financiers in target countries.
d. Collaborate with sales teams to identify and secure key in-country project partners that bolster market and project development efforts.
2. Project Development to:
a. Proactively seek and develop potential projects, managing them from concept to financial close. The role primarily supports the link between project development and sales, which may require involvement in only parts of the project development cycle.
b. Network with development and investment partners and secure project support.
c. Oversee the project investment and financing process, supporting due diligence and successful financial closure for projects.
d. Manage minority participation in project development, investment and financial structures when needed.
3. Strategy & Operations to:
a. Support the implementation of Wärtsilä Energy's Business strategy by organising workshops, providing regular reporting, and participating in cross-functional collaboration.
b. Manage strategic initiatives as required
c. Assist in developing and implementing marketing and communication strategies in the Area.
d. Support day-to-day team activities and administration.
Requirements
To succeed in this role, you should have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the following fields: Electrical Engineering, Finance, Energy, Economics, or a related field. You need to be fluent in English; another European language would be an advantage.
A successful candidate will have a positive and proactive approach and demonstrate ownership and responsibility for driving their own work. A considerable degree of autonomy is expected. The person we are looking for has excellent analytical skills, a good understanding of financial analysis, and advanced skills in MS tools. Strong modelling abilities are essential. You are a team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and developed networking abilities. An experience in project finance and a track record of supporting projects to a successful financial close would be an advantage.
- Fluency in English (another European language is an advantage).
- 7 plus years of relevant experience with a track record of tangible market or project development results and some management experience.
- A positive, proactive approach, with the ability to take ownership and responsibility for driving your work.
- Strong analytical and financial analysis skills, advanced proficiency in MS tools, and strong modelling abilities. Python or a similar programming knowledge is a plus
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a team-oriented attitude.
- Experience in project finance and supporting projects to successful financial closure would be an advantage.
Preferred location: Finland (Helsinki), France (Paris), Netherlands (Randstad Area).
Reporting to: General Manager, Growth & Development - Africa and Europe.
Travel Requirement: Willingness to travel within the Area for approximately 25 to 50% of the time.
