Manufacturing Engineer - Mechanical

Wärtsilä’s Energy Business seeking a skilled and experienced Manufacturing Engineer - Mechanical with a focus on metal enclosure manufacturing. The ideal candidate will be responsible for design for manufacturing, developing, and optimizing manufacturing processes to ensure the efficient production of metal enclosures. This role requires a strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, metal fabrication techniques, and quality control standards. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The role will be part of the Hardware Engineering team.

 

The location for this position is at Wärtsilä's office in Toronto, ON, Canada. This will be an onsite role.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop manufacturing processes for metal enclosures, including sheet metal fabrication, welding, painting and assembly.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing partners & design engineers to ensure manufacturability of new/existing products and provide feedback on design improvements.
  • Develop and implement/review process control plans, work instructions, pFMEA, dFMEA and manufacturing verification plans.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve manufacturing issues, working closely with production teams to implement corrective actions.
  • Evaluate and select appropriate tools, equipment, and technologies for metal enclosure manufacturing.
  • Work independently with vendors and design team to understand root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate design changes
  • Lead Engineering Change Requests/Notifications (ECRs/ECNs) from proposal to implementation
  • Lead design work for mechanical changes by updating product drawings & models
  • Support IP test of the product and maintaining the IP test procedure
  • Monitor and analyze production data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Drive continuous improvement in manufacturing processes
  • Lead defining & design tooling/fixtures for advance manufacturing & process improvements
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Collaborate in a team environment and/or take charge of opportunities to develop optimal solutions.

 

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 7-10+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on metal enclosure manufacturing.
  • Strong knowledge of metal fabrication techniques, including sheet metal forming, welding, painting and assembly
  • Strong knowledge of metal enclosure welding standard e.g. ISO 5817-C, ISO 13920 and procedures is a must have
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Creo, Inventor) and other engineering tools.
  • Experience with process improvement methodologies such as Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma.
  • Strong understanding of good documentation practices
  • Familiarity with NEMA and IP enclosure design and testing is an asset
  • Maintain positive working relationships with peers, subordinates, vendors, shop and office in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work with global team from different backgrounds and on different time zones
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Willing to travel 40% of the time.
