Senior Engineer - Design for Manufacturing (DFM)

Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for a Senior Engineer – Design for Manufacturing for the Energy Storage & Optimization business. The role will be part of the Hardware Engineering team.

 

The Senior Engineer - Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is responsible for ensuring that product designs are optimized for manufacturability, cost efficiency, and quality. This role involves close collaboration with design, engineering, and manufacturing teams to identify and implement improvements in product design and production processes. The Senior Engineer will leverage their expertise to drive innovation, reduce production costs, and enhance product performance. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter that can work both independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team. The candidate should thrive in a fast paced, constantly changing environment while the industry and company go through substantial growth.

 

Location(s) for this position is Wärtsilä’s Toronto office and will be on site.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and participate in assigned projects related to New Product Introduction (NPI)
  • Collaborate with design, engineering & manufacturing partner teams to review and improve product designs for manufacturability.
  • Conduct DFM analysis to identify potential manufacturing issues and provide solutions.
  • Conduct detail analysis of manufacturing processes for metal enclosures, including sheet metal fabrication, welding, painting and assembly.
  • Conduct design for tolerances reviews with product development team and manufacturing partners
  • Conduct design to Cost in collaboration with product development team and manufacturing partners
  • Participate in dFMEA exercises with design team and manufacturer
  • Responsible for the development of manufacturing processes and procedures for ES&O products including reviews of pFMEA.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure seamless transition from design to production.
  • Identify failure trends & systemic issues, conduct 8D/PDCA root cause analysis and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Evaluate products & manufacturing processes based on specifications and manufacturing standards
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and company policies.
  • Work independently with our manufacturing partners for prototypes and design team to understand root cause of failures, propose design or component changes, and implement and validate design changes
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional teams to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Prepare and present technical reports, documentation, and presentations to stakeholders.

 

Experience and Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field. A Master's degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in DFM/A analysis with focus on metal container/enclosure manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of metal enclosure welding standard e.g. ISO 5817-C, ISO 13920 and procedures is a must have
  • Experience in metal enclosure painting processes, standards & procedures
  • Proven track record of leading and implementing successful design and manufacturing projects.
  • Familiarity with NEMA and IP enclosure design and testing is an asset
  • Proficiency in PTC Creo, Inventor, Solid works or equivalent CAD software
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) is an asset to have
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work with global team from different backgrounds and time zones
  • Willing to travel 40% of the time.
