Alignment Expert

Alignment Expert

You will become part of the organisation responsible for services delivered by Wärtsilä Shaft Line Solutions (SLS). A growing team of field service professionals supporting an install base of over 30,0000 vessels fitted with OEM products produced by SLS. Wärtsilä Shaft Line Repair Services (SLRS) specialise in project managed repairs of marine propulsion shaft lines. SLRS are looking for an Alignment Expert, an experienced specialist in the alignment of rotating equipment. The Alignment Expert will analyse field data and perform calculations in order to provide technical recommendations and suggest work scopes to optimise the alignment of marine propulsion shaft lines. The role will be based in Asia, supporting our fastest growing market. Ideal candidate will be located in Singapore, China, Korea and Japan. 

 

Your main responsibilities are

  • Analysis of data, readings and measurements taken using lasers, 3D measurement techniques, strain gauges, proximity sensors, vibration equipment, load cells etc.
  • Trouble shoot, fault find and perform root cause analysis in relation to alignment & vibration.
  • Perform modelling and new alignment calculations to determine optimum alignment conditions.
  • Provide technical recommendations and suggest work scopes required to re-align shaft lines.
  • Provide training to engineers, ensuring accurate on-site measurements are recorded and provided.
  • Support, guide and instruct project managers, engineers, in-situ machinists, production engineers etc. prior to and during project execution.
  • On occasion, supervise work on site, in dry-dock and afloat:
    • Supervise alignment measurements using modern laser technology.
    • Supervise and compare results of jack-up tests using load-cells and traditional methods.
    • Supervise chocking and mounting of machinery using various techniques.
    • Supervise on-site machining of shafts and components.
    • Supervise removal & reinstallation of shaft lines and perform complete re-alignment.
    • Etc.
  • Produce a high standard of technical reports in a timely manner on completion of projects.
  • Ensure that the work is executed according to QHSE guidelines, procedures and policies.
  • Continuously seek for solutions in according to best practises.

 

Main requirements in this role are

  • A safety-first mind-set.
  • A careful and conscientious way of working.
  • Master’s Degree or PhD in Engineering, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • Experienced in propulsion shaft alignment using laser measurement tools and related equipment.
  • Proven experience of installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of propulsion shaft lines.
  • Well versed on shaft alignment procedures and methodologies.
  • Experience in the design & modelling of marine propulsion shaft line systems.
  • In depth knowledge of shaft alignment software (eg. ShaftDesigner).
  • Knowledge of MS Office, 2D/3D CAD, FEM programs.
  • Experience in vibrations measurement & analysis highly beneficial.
  • Experience in strain gauge technology highly beneficial.
  • Experience of working with electrical systems beneficial.
  • Interact professionally and willingness to deliver solutions.
  • Highly effective technical communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Fluent in English with Chinese and other relevant additional language skills beneficial.
  • You are located in Asia (China, Korea, Singapore, Japan preferred) and willing and able to travel.
