Data Engineer

Wärtsilä is transforming into a smart technology company that is customer-centric, data driven, collaborative and innovative. We are exploring new digital business models and innovations together with our partners. We develop new services, solutions and products through a digital first, insights-led mind-set that is all about open innovation and ensuring that everything begins with understanding the customer needs. Cyber security is one of our core competences. In our products, our operations, our thought leadership and our strategy. We are on a mission to digitize our current business through more integrated solutions, robotics, smart manufacturing, integrated supply chain, technology road maps, less manual interventions, and new streamlined processes. People are the engine of our transformation. Every day, our people put their hearts and minds to turning smart Marine and Energy visions and strategies into tangible results, and delivering customer-value.

We are looking for a Data Engineer to join the Digital team in Singapore. The main responsibilities of the incumbent include:

Data collection

  • Lead local efforts around various client-side implementations of the Wärtsilä Data Collection Unit (WDCU), a data collection hardware system that allows for connection, collection and transfer to cloud platforms.

Data connectivity and transfer

  • Take ownership of the local Singapore cloud data platforms, access, management and maintenance controls and procedures.
  • Ensure that all data collection hardware and software is compliant with whatever constraints are required by Wärtsilä's cybersecurity policies and stakeholders.
  • Support the feasibility analysis, configuration, implementation and maintenance of 4G and 5G data connectivity in maritime environments for various hardware setups.

Data analytics use cases

  • Co-create with internal stakeholders and external clients a local data strategy creating specific use cases and a digital sandbox reflective of local maritime industry data (portside, shipping, environmental etc.).

Data analytics QA/QC

  • Create automation scripts that validate existing data collected, looking for logical errors as well as conflicts with business rules.
  • Create automation scripts that analyse the types and amounts of data collected, and any downtime or reduced efficacy in data collection.

Data dashboard/analytics prototyping

  • Create APIs and/or gateways to allow internal stakeholders and external clients to view (and potentially search/filter/refine) data dashboards and analytics.
  • Produce data analytics and data insights primarily related to maritime vessel and surrounding environment safety, vessel efficiency and vessel regulatory compliance.
  • Visualize data analytics and insights using existing storytelling, allowing mid-to-senior stakeholders to understand complex context, findings and subsequent actions derived from the data.
  • Rapidly prototype dashboards, visualisations and metrics during co-creation sessions with internal stakeholders and external clients.

Ideally, you should possess the following:

  • Minimum 4 years of IT experience with at least 3 years of hands-on data analyst or engineer experience.
  • Strong Python scripting skills.
  • Experience in SQL and NoSQL.
  • Experience with data visualization tools.
  • Strong analytical, communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstratable abilities in design thinking and rapid prototyping.
  • Able to explain complex algorithms in simple terms.
  • Familiar with different types of databases and ways of storing and accessing data.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge with data profiling, data analysis, data specification, data flow and business logic.

You will have an added advantage if you have the following experiences:

  • Experience in heavy industries such as maritime, manufacturing and/or engineering
  • Experience in Amazon Web Services and  PowerBI
  • Experience with tapping into image and video analytics APIs and capabilities
