Senior Mechanical Engineer - Product Lead

Wärtsilä is an innovative technology company known for being a forerunner in the Marine and Energy markets. Every day, we – Wärtsilians - put our hearts and minds into turning Wärtsilä's purpose of enabling sustainable societies through innovation in technology and services into reality. Our ultimate aim is to provide increased value to both our customers and society. New, game-changing ideas and continuous improvement have been part of our DNA since 1834. Together, we can create new business opportunities and more sustainable future that we can all be proud of.

We want to transition the world towards a decarbonised and sustainable future. By pushing the boundaries of engineering and technology, we can make it work. We are always on the lookout for future-oriented talent – want to join the ride?

This position is needed to fill the mechanical discipline technical product leadership gap that exists for Quantum products developed within the last three years. Recently, a senior principal engineer in this role left Wartsila. Currently the mechanical and thermal department manager is partially filling that gap while also executing his other duties. An experienced mechanical engineering generalist should be in place to coordinate cross-functionally with project management, procurement / manufacturing, and service (beyond the mechanical team), and product design (productization management and engineers) and mechanical and electrical subject matter experts. They must understand and be able to estimate, track, and report on the department’s work related to product development and prototype/pilot manufacturing and testing.

Experience level: Senior Professionals

Job Ad Description:

Wärtsilä’s Energy Business is looking for a highly motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Energy Storage Business division. This engineer will be responsible for owning mechanical engineering efforts in China (with support from other engineers in US/Canada/China) for newer members of the Quantum product family - battery energy storage systems that enable the effective utilization of renewable energy for Wartsila’s customers. Additionally, the SeniorI Mechanical Engineer will be expected to work with various teams from different disciplines to ensure timely delivery of design efforts and support existing manufacturing. This position requires flexibility to work on multiple projects in various stages of the design, validation, manufacturing, and sustainment product life cycle. It requires balancing technical rigor with schedule and cost constraints to support commercial product delivery.

This position is based in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China. Significant travel within the Suzhou-Shanghai area, 5% in-China travel beyond this area, and periodic travel to the US or Canada is expected.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will have these responsibilities:

  • Act as the mechanical product engineering authority for assigned products, leading technical decision-making and driving resolution of design trade-offs across disciplines.
  • Serve as a product lead engineer in coordinating design reviews and engineering change management activities.
  • Schedule and track the activities of mechanical department team members as they maintain product designs, documentation, and bills of materials via the change management process.
  • Report status on design efforts to department managers and project managers.
  • Support external requests for assistance, either directly or by arranging help within the department, from sales, manufacturing, quality, field installation, and field maintenance organizations.
  • Have systems level understanding for all aspects of the product beyond the mechanical/thermal portions (electrical, fire protection, site civil installation.)
  • Prepare and maintain requirements documents related to the product and subsystems.
  • Remain technically hands-on where appropriate, contributing to critical design or analysis tasks based on expertise.
  • Preferably have (or develop) CAD experience with Creo and Windchill to be able to find relevant documentation and design information quickly.
  • Identify and offer solutions for design issues/risks and support driving implementation.
  • Mentor others toward having a systems level appreciation for the product (especially interactions between subsystems.)

To be successful in this role, we expect you to:

  • Have strong understanding of systems design in the context of outdoor skid-packaged equipment made at volume production levels.
  • Possess ability to evaluate designs using both analytical/first-principles approaches and empirical engineering judgment.
  • Have experience working with suppliers or contract manufacturers
  • Have experience in design-for-manufacturing in high-volume or cost-sensitive environments
  • Be a mechanical engineering generalist (structural/thermal/fluid flow). An appreciation for the power electrical discipline and subject matter (for example, ability to read power/control electrical diagrams) is a substantial benefit.
  • Have strong communication skills to be able to gauge a given audience and explain technically complex ideas/concerns at the level appropriate.
  • Exhibit strong organizational skills with an appreciation for scheduling and task management. Understanding of and direct experience with scheduling tools, the ability to break down projects into trackable subtasks of estimate-able durations, and personal experience executing engineering design tasks is key. A good sense for gauging the durations of design task.
  • Exhibit collaborative leadership skills, helping team members understand and own their assigned tasks, take accountability for the quality of their work product, and agree and execute to achievable timelines.
  • Be experienced working with configuration control / engineering change management and have a solid understanding of engineering documentation practices for a standardized product.
  • Be practical, understanding the financial and schedule impacts of design decisions and particularly when a design is “good enough”.
  • Be dedicated and committed to results in a dynamic environment where products are simultaneously being manufactured, installed, and maintained at sites globally.
  • Possess experience with the design of outdoor skid-packaged equipment. Experience with enclosure/container design requirements, standards, manufacturing, and IP rating experience is beneficial.
  • Understand varied manufacturing processes related to skid packaged equipment fabrication, for example structural and sheet metal construction/welding, painting, equipment bolting, and electrical assembly. Familiarity with AWS D1.1/A2.4 and/or ISO 2553 weld symbology is a plus.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal English and interpersonal skills. This is of critical importance since the technical work and documentation will be in English and communication with Canadian and US offices will be in English.
  • Be able to work with an international team with different backgrounds and in different time zones.

Minimum Experience and Educational Requirements:

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • 10+ years technical experience including 5+ years product level discipline leadership experience in a commercial product development environment (preferably skid packaged equipment.)
  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or possibly Chemical Engineering). Advanced degree is a plus. Strong preference for candidates who demonstrate deep understanding of engineering fundamentals (e.g., heat transfer, fluid flow, structural mechanics) and the ability to apply first-principles thinking to product design.
