Job Title: Legal Counsel – Energy Storage (12-month fixed term)


Location: Sydney CBD (hybrid, part-time and flexible arrangements considered)

The opportunity

We’re looking for a commercially minded lawyer to join Wärtsilä’s Energy Storage Business in Australia. You’ll support a Tier 1 global energy storage provider working on some of Australia’s most significant, technically complex, and market-leading energy projects.

This role suits someone who enjoys ownership, moves confidently between legal detail and commercial outcomes, and thrives in finding practical solutions to complex challenges.

 

What you’ll do

You’ll partner closely with commercial, project delivery, and leadership teams across the project lifecycle - from tender and contract negotiations through to delivery and back-end support.

The role is high impact. You’ll take an active role on large, technically complex and first of kind-energy storage projects. Heping our utility and developer customers navigate some of the most complex challenges of the energy transition.

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Lead and support contract negotiations with customers, partners, and key suppliers; identify, explain, and manage legal/commercial risk in a practical way.
  • Draft, structure and negotiate high-value agreements, including supply, services, commissioning, O&M/LTSA-style arrangements, SaaS/software and data-related terms, NDAs, and global procurement agreements.
  • Advise on project delivery support projects teams navigate project delivery challenges with a solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Improve how we work, implement and continuously refine contracting playbooks, templates, and ways of working. Coach stakeholders to lift contracting capability across the business.
  • Work with senior management to ensure that company risk policy and other key requirements are followed in respect of entry into commercial contracts and day-to-day operations
  • Occasional travel may be required to support customer and project needs.

 

About you:

  • Commercial communicator: you explain complex topics clearly, raise issues early, and propose workable solutions.
  • Strong judgment: you balance legal risk with business outcomes and can take a principled position when it matters.
  • Collaborative partner: you’re brilliant but grounded, enjoy building trust with multidisciplinary teams and work effectively across a matrix organisation.
  • Curious and pragmatic: you have strong technical curiosity and enjoy learning the technical and delivery realities behind the contract. You understand, or are keen to learn, energy project specific issues (grid connections, programs, specifications, drawings etc.)
  • Customer-oriented: you build credible, professional relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Creative: a proactive problem-solver who enjoys finding creative solutions to solve pain points and enable commercial opportunities.
  • High ownership and drive: you take responsibility for outcomes, build personal and organisational performance, and continuously look for better ways to do things.
  • Globally minded & ethical: comfortable working across time zones and cultures, and you reinforce Wärtsilä’s safety and integrity standards above all.

 

Experience and qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years PQE in private practice or in-house.
  • Admitted to practice in Australia. Foreign-qualified candidates from an equivalent common law jurisdiction may be considered if eligible to work in Australia.
  • Experience in construction/infrastructure/energy is highly valued. Adjacent experience handling complex negotiations, deals, or disputes is also well regarded.

 

Contract

This is a 12-month fixed-term role based in Sydney. If you’re outside Sydney or seeking an alternative arrangement, we’re open to discussing flexibility for the right candidate.
