Engineering Manager - Mechanical Productization

Wärtsilä’s Energy Business looking for a highly motivated Engineering Manager to join the rapidly growing Energy Storage & Optimization division. The Engineering Manager will be responsible for managing the productization team, which creates CAD models and drawings for new battery energy storage systems- ultimately to enable the effective utilization of renewable energy for Wartsila’s customers.  Additionally, the engineering manager will be expected to work with various teams from different disciplines to ensure timely delivery of new designs and support existing manufacturing. This position requires flexibility to work on multiple projects in various stages of the design, validation, and manufacturing product life cycle.

 

Preferred location for this position is Toronto, Ontario Canada. 25% travel is expected.

 

Educational requirements:

Our ideal candidate will have Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 10+ years technical experience, and 5+ years managerial experience.

 

As Engineering Manager, you will have these responsibilities: 

  • Lead the engineering CAD team designing cost-effective fabrications to be built globally.
  • Manage the team that develops advanced CAD designs into built-to-print level drawings.
  • Bring expertise and mentor other team members with these responsibilities by establishing best practices and procedures.
  • Help manage Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
  • Provide overall leadership and administrative management for personnel which includes: defining roles and responsibilities, conducting performance appraisals, salary planning, promoting professional growth through timely performance feedback, coaching, and counseling, among other leadership responsibilities.
  • Build the technical abilities of the team, including support developing a pipeline of controlled title holders. Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and technical direction to assigned personnel.
  • Provide support and technical system expertise to the rest of the development organization on topics related to our HW solutions and related sub-systems and components.
  • Define design issues and risks to the product team and support driving solution and implementation.
  • Collaborate with the larger team to optimize requirements and needs.
  • Support individuals in their career development plan.

 

To be successful in this role, we expect you to:

  • Have strong understanding of system design for assemblies or installations.
  • Be dedicated and committed to results in a dynamic and fast developing environment.
  • Be highly proficient designing structural weldments, electrical cabinets, or outdoor enclosures.
  • Be expert with sheet metal design and cable routing using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Understand manufacturing processes and equipment such as laser/water-jet machines, sheet metal, pipe and tube fabrication, structural (I-beams, C-channel) fabrication.
  • Be familiar with weld call-out (AWS D1.1/ A2.4) and dimensioning practices (ASME Y14.5). Experience with equivalent ISO standards is a plus.
  • Be experienced with configuration control management, with expert level understanding of PTC Windchill is highly desirable.  Experience with Autodesk Vault is a plus.
  • Have strong understanding of good documentation practices.
  • Experience with Agile methodology and use of Asana is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal English and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to work with international team from different backgrounds, and in different time zones.
  • Be willing to travel up to 25% of the time.
