We are seeking a highly motivated (Senior) Technical Expert with a curious mind and a passion for solving problems to lead Wärtsilä's efforts in fuel system troubleshooting and development. We welcome candidates at various levels of seniority, as this role can also be offered as a Senior Technical Expert.
The preferred location for this position is in Vaasa (Finland) or in Trieste (Italy). In line with our hybrid work model, you will be able to work partially remotely.
Your role and responsibilities
As a (Senior) Technical Expert, you will work with technical queries from end customers. You will solve complex technical and operational problems, propose product improvements to meet quality targets, and ultimately ensure customer satisfaction. This role bridges the gap between theory and practice, field operations, and RDE, bringing field incident experience to developers and suppliers to prevent re-occurrence.
This role is essential for maintaining the reliability and efficiency of our fuel systems. As we expand our methanol installations and transition towards more sustainable marine fuels, the expertise provided by this position will be crucial in optimizing performance, minimizing downtime, and ensuring seamless integration of new technologies.
Your exceptional diagnostic skills and ability to tackle complex challenges will be vital in ensuring the smooth operation of our systems and upholding our high standards of performance.
As a Senior Technical Expert, you will focus on these responsibilities:
- Serve as the system expert for liquid fuel feed systems, including methanol and dual-fuel configurations.
- Lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting for complex fuel-related issues both in the field and remotely.
- Collaborate with automation, component, and field service teams to resolve technical challenges and improve system performance.
- Provide technical guidance and documentation for internal stakeholders, shipyards, and customers.
- Support commissioning and start-up activities, including on-site coordination and remote diagnostics.
- Conducting site surveys and troubleshooting in the field for more interesting cases.
- Contribute to the development of new fuel system technologies and participate in R&D and product improvement initiatives with suppliers.
- Act as a mentor and knowledge resource for junior engineers and technical specialists.
Preferred qualifications and experience:
- BSc or MSc in Mechanical Engineering or similar education.
- Experience of auxiliary systems in the field.
- A basic understanding of mass and heat balances.
- A genuine passion for engines, related auxiliaries and a desire to make a difference.
- Experience with engine cooling, heat recovery, lubrication, or gas systems.
- A solution-oriented mindset and excellent analytical and technical problem-solving skills.
- Ambition to learn, adapt to, and develop new technologies.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, is required.
- Willingness to travel when required.
