We are looking for an Engine Automation Technical Expert to strengthen the Technical Services Automation team. The location for this role is Trieste, Italy. In accordance to our local hybrid work model, you will be able to work partially remotely. This role also includes travelling approximately 25% of the time.
In this role, you will become a key expert in embedded engine controls and automation systems, supporting customers and products operating worldwide. This is a unique opportunity to combine hands-on troubleshooting, software configuration, field support, testing, and product development while working alongside experts across the global Wärtsilä network.
At Wärtsilä Technical Services, you will join a highly specialized international team and gain in-depth expertise in control systems for 4-stroke engines used in both marine and power plant applications.
Your role and responsibilities
As an Engine Automation Technical Expert, you will play a key role in supporting and developing automation solutions for Wärtsilä 4-stroke engines operating in marine and power plant applications worldwide.
Your responsibilities will include:

Providing high-level technical support to both internal and external customers remotely and on-site.

Investigating, troubleshooting, and resolving complex automation and control system issues.

Conducting site surveys, commissioning support, and field investigations around the world.

Simulating and analyzing field issues in our advanced automation laboratory using physical and virtual test environments.

Performing root cause analyses and supporting product reliability improvements.

Managing engine automation software configurations, upgrades, backups, and system modifications.

Collecting and analyzing field feedback, failure statistics, and operational data to identify improvement opportunities.

Preparing technical documentation including service bulletins, manuals, investigation reports, and survey reports.

Initiating, leading, and supporting product and process development projects.

Collaborating with R&D and other technical departments to solve challenging technical problems and enhance product performance.

Supporting product introductions, validation, and testing activities for next-generation automation platforms.

Acting as a technical reference point for product and field-related expertise across the organization.
Requirements for the position

B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Systems, or a related field.

Experience in technical troubleshooting and problem-solving.

Experience with embedded control or automation systems.

Strong analytical mindset and systematic approach to technical investigations.

Good communication skills and proficiency in English.

Willingness to travel approximately 25% of the time.
It would be great if you also have

Experience with engine control systems, power generation, marine automation, or industrial automation.

Knowledge of generators, propulsion systems, or energy-related applications.

Experience with software configuration and diagnostics of embedded systems.

The annual salary range in Italy for this role is 35.822 EUR – 48.671 EUR in accordance with the salary provisions in the applicable National Collective Labor Agreement for workers in the metalworking and plant installation industry (CCNL Metalmeccanico).
